The post holder will participate in the consultant-led paediatric trauma service to maintain high quality trauma care with consultant involvement in early operative work and fracture clinic supervision. They will be involved in the comprehensive paediatric elective service. As well as general paediatric elective work, the successful applicant will be expected to take on a sub-specialist role sharing the management of the developmental dysplasia of the hip and clubfoot service in order to compliment the interests and sub-specialities of the current post holders. Experience within other specific areas of paediatric orthopaedics is desirable but not essential, for example, limb reconstruction, pelvic and hip surgery, or foot & ankle surgery.

Key Responsibilities: Provide clinical technical services for servicing, inspection and repair with the aim of ensuring the safety, accuracy and reliability of a wide range of patient-critical medical equipment. Communicate with clinical users to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment. Assess the seriousness and implications of the problem and respond appropriately to the urgency of the user request. Undertake fault finding. Apply suitable fault finding techniques to diagnose problems. Report unusual fault conditions to manufacturers. Exercise judgement to determine the causes of faults in devices with inter-related systems (e.g. electronic, computer and mechanical systems. Rectify equipment faults. Undertake repairs on mechanisms to component level. Check that equipment performs to manufacturers specification. Carry out calibration, quality control and safety testing. Carry out electrical and functional safety checks. Advise on equipment specification, evaluation and selection. Logging and supervision of loan, rented or hired equipment. Liaise with manufacturers to obtain information and provide feedback on equipment performance. The procurement of parts and services on the departments financial cost centre, following the Trusts guidelines. This will sometimes include negotiation/persuasion, for example when obtaining loan equipment or free of charge replacements. Evaluation of new medical/test equipment, leading to the subsequent acceptance of the equipment by the department. Ensuring the safe disposal of condemned items/waste as per regulations (WEE, RoHS etc) and Trust policies. Ensuring the calibration of workshop tools/test equipment to be able to ensure the calibration of repaired/PPMd medical devices. Plan and prioritise own workload. Confirming that the work carried out by contractors is of a satisfactory level before the equipment is returned for use. Compiling and maintaining a written and computerised register of medical equipment, including but not restricted to, scientific and technical records of work performed, device details, relevant specifications, location, and technical history including all test results that are generated. In particular ensure the equipment information is maintained in an accurate, methodical manner with work being logged as it progresses until completion. Action as appropriate NHS or manufacturers safety and hazard notices. Be familiar with and follow the trusts incident reporting procedure notifying the Section Head of any circumstances or clinical incidents involving any medical device. Investigation into the probable cause of equipment failure after an incident, leading to the operation of the Defect and Failure Report procedure when necessary. This will include compiling a detailed report for the MHRA (Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) and the MDSO (Medical Device Safety Officer). Communicating technical information of a complex nature to colleagues/suppliers relating to the use of equipment and fault symptoms/remedies.
