About the Role
A specialist SEN school in Rochdale is seeking a confident, adaptable, and compassionate Cover Supervisor to join their dedicated team. The school supports pupils with a range of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), and communication and interaction difficulties.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering pre-planned lessons during teacher absences, ensuring pupils remain engaged, supported, and safe throughout the school day. You will work closely with teaching assistants, teachers, and the wider pastoral team to maintain a positive and structured learning environment that meets the individual needs of all pupils.
This role is ideal for individuals considering a future career in teaching or those with experience supporting children and young people with additional needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervising whole classes using pre-prepared lesson plans in the absence of the class teacher
- Supporting pupils with a range of SEND needs to access learning activities
- Managing classroom behaviour using positive and consistent strategies
- Adapting communication and support approaches to meet individual pupil needs
- Working alongside teaching assistants and support staff to ensure pupils remain engaged and on task
- Supporting pupils' social, emotional, and behavioural development
- Promoting a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment
- Providing feedback to teaching staff on pupil engagement, behaviour, and progress during cover sessions

The Successful Applicant Will
- Have experience working with children or young people in an educational, youth work, care, or support setting
- Be confident managing groups of pupils and maintaining a positive learning environment
- Have strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Be calm, patient, and resilient when supporting pupils with additional needs
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability across different classes and age groups
- Have the right to work in the UK and full-time availability
Desirable:
- Previous experience as a Cover Supervisor, Teaching Assistant, Youth Worker, Sports Coach, or Behaviour Mentor
- Experience supporting pupils with ASC, SEMH, ADHD, or complex needs
- Team Teach, MAPA, or similar positive behaviour support training
- Degree-level education or aspirations to pursue a teaching career
- Knowledge of EHCPs and SEND support strategies
