Summary
Your new company
Are you an accomplished communications professional who can transform complex information into clear, engaging content? This is an exciting opportunity to join a purpose-led, not-for-profit organisation, take ownership of key internal communications activities and help colleagues across different sites, disciplines and roles feel informed, connected and able to contribute.
Your new role
As Internal Communications Officer, you will join the Communications and Engagement team and report to the Senior Internal Communications Manager. You will coordinate the day-to-day delivery of UKCEH's internal communication channels and content, including the intranet, newsletters, email updates and online staff sessions.
Taking substantial ownership of the editorial calendar, regular communication channels and defined campaigns, you will:
- Research, write and edit engaging internal communications for different audiences, translating scientific, technical and corporate information into clear, accessible language.
- Maintain a forward-looking editorial calendar, commission contributions, identify content opportunities and coordinate deadlines across the organisation.
- Publish accurate, timely and accessible content in line with agreed brand, editorial and governance standards.
- Create and adapt content across a variety of formats, including articles, interviews, briefings, presentations, simple graphics and short-form video.
- Identify stories that recognise colleagues, demonstrate organisational impact and strengthen understanding of UKCEH's priorities.
- Coordinate internal communications campaigns and projects from initial brief through to delivery and evaluation.
- Support leadership communications, staff briefings, town halls and employee engagement activities.
- Use channel data, feedback and other evidence to evaluate performance and recommend practical improvements.
- Build constructive relationships with colleagues, leaders, internal networks and content contributors.
- Identify emerging issues, conflicting messages and delivery risks, escalating these appropriately to the Senior Internal Communications Manager.
You will organise your own workload and make day-to-day editorial and delivery decisions within agreed strategies, plans and standards. You will also be accountable for the quality, accuracy and timely delivery of your work, while coordinating input from colleagues across the organisation.
What you'll need to succeed
To succeed as Internal Communications Officer, you will bring relevant experience from internal communications, employee engagement, corporate communications, journalism, digital content or a closely related field.
You will also be able to demonstrate:
- Excellent written English, with the ability to turn complex or technical information into clear, accurate and engaging content.
- Confidence using digital publishing and collaboration tools, such as an intranet or content management system, email platforms, Microsoft 365, Teams or equivalent.
- Strong planning and organisational skills, with experience managing an editorial calendar, multiple deadlines or communication activity involving several contributors.
- The interpersonal skills and confidence to build productive relationships, commission content and obtain information from busy colleagues at different levels.
- Sound editorial judgement, strong attention to detail and an understanding of when information may be sensitive or require escalation.
- An audience-centred approach and an understanding of how channel, format, timing and tone influence communication and engagement.
- The ability to use basic data and feedback to assess communications activity and recommend practical improvements.
- A proactive, collaborative and dependable approach, with the ability to work independently within agreed priorities and guidance.
Experience within a dispersed, hybrid, scientific, technical, higher education, public-sector or mission-led organisation would be highly advantageous. Experience creating visual, audio or video content using Canva, Adobe Express or similar tools, alongside knowledge of accessible and inclusive communication practices.
