Long Term Futures is seeking a resilient and dedicated Behaviour Mentor to join a supportive Alternative Provision in Walsall. This is a rewarding opportunity to work with children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs who are currently unable to successfully access a mainstream school environment.
The successful candidate will play an important role in providing pupils with the consistency, structure, and encouragement they need to re-engage with education. You'll need to be confident working with challenging behaviour, able to remain calm under pressure, and skilled at building positive relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
About the Role
Working closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and senior leaders, your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Providing 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs
- Supporting young people who have struggled to engage successfully within mainstream education
- Building strong, trusting relationships while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries
- Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner
- Supporting pupils to develop emotional regulation, resilience, and positive coping strategies
- Encouraging pupils to re-engage with learning and develop more positive attitudes towards education
- Providing support within lessons and during targeted intervention sessions
- Monitoring behaviour, engagement, and progress, providing feedback to relevant staff
- Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, families, and external professionals to support positive outcomes
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Previous experience working within an Alternative Provision, SEMH setting, PRU, SEN school, or similar environment is desirable
- Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour would be advantageous
- Able to remain calm, composed, and professional when faced with challenging behaviour
- Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
- Patient, resilient, and consistent in your approach
- Excellent at building rapport and developing trusting relationships with young people
- Able to establish clear boundaries while remaining approachable and supportive
- Passionate about helping vulnerable young people overcome barriers to education
