Some young people arrive in specialist education believing school simply isn't for them.

They may have experienced repeated exclusions, disrupted education, anxiety, trauma or difficulties managing their emotions and behaviour.

They may be academically capable but unable to engage consistently.

Others will have additional SEND that means traditional classroom approaches simply haven't worked.

For the right teacher, that's not a reason to lower expectations.

It's a reason to teach differently.

Working within specialist education means understanding that engagement often has to come before attainment.

A carefully planned lesson means very little if a pupil isn't emotionally ready to access it.

You'll need to recognise when to challenge, when to adapt and when a young person needs a different route into learning altogether.

Depending on the setting and opportunity, your role could include:

- Planning and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons.

- Teaching pupils individually, in small groups or specialist classes.

- Adapting curriculum content around different abilities and learning needs.

- Supporting young people with SEMH, SEN and additional barriers to learning.

- Identifying gaps caused by disrupted education and helping pupils rebuild confidence.

- Using creative approaches to re-engage reluctant learners.

- Setting achievable but appropriately ambitious targets.

- Monitoring progress and adapting teaching accordingly.

- Creating predictable routines and clear expectations.

- Using positive behaviour strategies and effective de-escalation.

- Supporting pupils' emotional regulation and personal development.

- Working closely with Teaching Assistants and pastoral staff.

- Collaborating with families, carers and external professionals.

- Maintaining high standards of safeguarding and professional practice.

Specialist teaching isn't about accepting that a pupil "can't".

It's about understanding why they currently can't and what needs to change to help them get there.

You'll need to build strong relationships without losing professional boundaries.

You'll need patience without lowering expectations.

And you'll need the resilience to understand that progress isn't always linear.

One day, success might be completing a piece of work.

Another day, it could simply be a young person staying in the classroom, managing their frustration differently or choosing to try again after something has gone wrong.

Those moments matter because they're often the foundations for everything that follows.

You may already be an experienced SEMH or SEN Teacher.

Alternatively, you might be a mainstream teacher who has discovered that your strengths lie with pupils who need a more individual approach.

We're interested in hearing from teachers who:

- Hold QTS/QTLS or are working towards an appropriate teaching qualification.

- Have experience within SEN, SEMH, alternative provision or secondary education.

- Can build positive relationships with young people who may initially be reluctant to engage.

- Have strong classroom and behaviour-management skills.

- Can remain calm and consistent in challenging situations.

- Understand the importance of structure, boundaries and predictability.

- Are creative enough to adapt teaching when the first approach doesn't work.

- Can work effectively alongside education, pastoral and therapeutic professionals.

- Believe that previous difficulties in education shouldn't define a young person's future.

Experience within alternative provision, PRUs, SEND schools, SEMH settings or behaviour support would be particularly valuable.
