There are assessments to prepare for, gaps to identify and a lot of curriculum to consolidate.
But there are also 10 and 11-year-olds who deserve a final year of primary school that feels like considerably more than preparation for a set of tests.
A primary school in Levenshulme is looking for a full-time Year 6 Teacher who can strike that balance.
You'll need to be academically ambitious for your class, confident with upper KS2 and able to prepare pupils thoroughly - while keeping curiosity, confidence and enjoyment firmly in the classroom.
By Year 6, pupils arrive with six years of different experiences and different starting points.
Some will need targeted support with fundamental concepts. Others will be ready to stretch beyond age-related expectations.
Your job will be to know your class well enough to understand the difference.
You'll use assessment intelligently to identify where teaching needs to be focused, rather than simply racing through revision.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and delivering the Year 6 curriculum
- Preparing pupils effectively for KS2 SATs
- Identifying and addressing gaps in English and maths
- Providing appropriate challenge for higher-attaining pupils
- Differentiating teaching for SEND and additional learning needs
- Monitoring attainment and progress
- Maintaining strong classroom routines and expectations
- Working effectively with Teaching Assistants and intervention staff
- Communicating with parents and carers
- Contributing to planning and development across the wider school
Year 6 pupils still need science, creativity, discussion, investigation and opportunities to become interested in the wider world.
We're looking for a teacher who can protect that breadth while managing the academic demands of the year.
You'll need:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
- Strong KS2 teaching experience
- Excellent knowledge of the National Curriculum
- Confidence with Year 6 assessment and expectations
- Effective behaviour management
- Strong differentiation and assessment skills
- Good communication and organisation
- The ability to work collaboratively within a primary team
Previous Year 6 experience would be particularly valuable, as would experience teaching within a diverse school community.
This is a full-time Year 6 teaching position in Levenshulme, paying £125-£180 per day, depending on experience.
