Summary
Psychology Graduate - SEN Learning Support Assistant
Rochdale, Greater Manchester
£13-£15 per hour | Full-Time or 2-3 Days per Week | ASAP Start
Now you can see what those things actually look like in the life of a young person.
We're looking for Psychology graduates to work as SEN Learning Support Assistants within a college environment in Rochdale.
This isn't a psychology placement and you won't be working as a psychologist.
What you will get is something extremely useful if you're considering a future career involving young people, SEND or mental health:
direct, practical experience.
You've probably studied autism, cognitive development, behaviour, communication and emotional wellbeing as part of your degree.
In this role, you'll begin to understand how differently those things can present from one individual to another.
You'll support students with needs including autism, ADHD, SEMH and communication or learning difficulties, helping them participate in education and become increasingly confident and independent.
You might:
- Work 1:1 with a student during a lesson
- Support a small group with a particular activity
- Help a young person remain engaged when concentration is difficult
- Use visual or communication strategies
- Reinforce an individual learning or support plan
- Help a student recognise and manage emotions
- Encourage social interaction and participation
- Observe patterns in behaviour and engagement
- Record progress and share relevant observations
- Work alongside teachers and SEND professionals
Why does one strategy work brilliantly with one autistic student and completely fail with another?
When is a behaviour communicating anxiety rather than defiance?
How do you encourage independence without withdrawing support too quickly?
How do you build trust while maintaining professional boundaries?
Those are things you learn through working with people, not just studying them.
And that's what makes this experience particularly relevant for graduates considering careers in areas such as:
Educational Psychology | Clinical Psychology | Child Psychology | Mental Health | Counselling | SEND | Teaching | Youth Work
Previous experience in education or SEND would be useful, but it isn't essential.
We're much more interested in whether you have the right foundations to develop.
You should:
- Hold a Psychology degree or closely related qualification
- Have a genuine interest in SEND, behaviour and development
- Be comfortable working directly with young people and vulnerable adults
- Communicate clearly and professionally
- Be patient and emotionally resilient
- Be willing to learn from experienced colleagues
- Understand the importance of safeguarding and confidentiality
- Be able to work effectively as part of a wider team
Positions are available full-time or 2-3 days per week, paying £13-£15 per hour, with immediate starts available.
That could make the role particularly useful if you're building relevant experience alongside further study, preparing for postgraduate training or still deciding which area of psychology or education you'd eventually like to pursue.
You don't need to have your entire career mapped out.
But if you know you want it to involve understanding and supporting young people, this is a very good place to start.
