Summary

We are recruiting a SEND Functional Skills Tutor to work with an education provider in Leicester, delivering targeted Functional Skills tuition to young people with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and delivering structured, differentiated learning, primarily across English and Maths Functional Skills, with additional support around digital and practical skills where required.

Learners may have different starting points, abilities and barriers to education, so teaching will need to be adapted around individual needs rather than delivered through a standard classroom approach.

The focus of the role is to help learners make measurable progress towards their individual learning outcomes and Functional Skills qualifications, while developing the practical literacy and numeracy skills needed for further education, employment and greater independence.

As a SEND Functional Skills Tutor, you will:

- Plan and deliver Functional Skills teaching appropriate to individual ability and starting points.

- Deliver English and Maths tuition across relevant Functional Skills levels.

- Assess learners to identify current attainment, strengths and areas requiring additional support.

- Develop individual learning plans and set clear, achievable targets.

- Differentiate teaching, resources and activities for learners with SEND.

- Provide individual and small-group tuition where required.

- Prepare learners for Functional Skills assessments and qualifications.

- Monitor attainment and record progress against agreed targets.

- Identify where a learner is not progressing and adjust teaching strategies accordingly.

- Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessment, interventions and outcomes.

- Work alongside teaching assistants and other education or SEND professionals.

- Contribute to reviews and provide relevant information on learner progress.

- Use appropriate educational technology and digital resources to support learning.

- Follow safeguarding, SEND and organisational policies and procedures.

Previous experience of adapting teaching for learners with additional needs is important for this position.

Learners may require adjustments to areas such as:

- Pace and structure of teaching.

- Language and instructions.

- Learning materials and resources.

- Communication methods.

- Length and format of activities.

- Assessment preparation.

- Sensory or environmental considerations.

- Levels of individual adult support.

The successful tutor will need to understand the barriers individual learners may experience and be able to make appropriate adjustments while maintaining clear learning objectives and expectations.

Applicants should have:

- A relevant qualification in education, SEND or a related discipline.

- At least two years' relevant teaching or tutoring experience with learners with SEND.

- Experience planning and delivering differentiated learning.

- A good understanding of additional learning needs and inclusive teaching practice.

- Strong literacy and numeracy skills.

- The ability to assess starting points and monitor learner progress.

- Good written and verbal communication skills.

- Strong organisation and record-keeping skills.

- Confidence using digital learning resources and educational technology.

- The ability to work independently and as part of a wider education team.

It would be beneficial if you have:

- Previous experience delivering Functional Skills English and/or Maths.

- Knowledge of Functional Skills assessment and qualification requirements.

- Experience developing individual learning plans.

- Experience supporting learners working towards recognised qualifications.

- Knowledge of EHCPs and individual SEND outcomes.

- Experience using assistive or adaptive technology.

- A postgraduate SEND qualification or other relevant specialist training.

The role offers:

- £125+ per day, dependent on qualifications and experience.

- Full-time work in Leicester.

- Ongoing professional development and training.

- Experience within specialist SEND education.

- Collaborative working with education and support professionals.

- Opportunities to further develop Functional Skills and SEND teaching experience.

If you have relevant teaching or tutoring experience and are interested in a SEND Functional Skills Tutor position in Leicester, please submit your CV together with a brief outline of your relevant experience.

Suitable applicants will be contacted to discuss the position and next steps.
