Summary

SEND Teaching Assistant - Challenging Behaviour

Location: Surbiton, KT5 - commutable from Kingston upon Thames, Tolworth, New Malden, Berrylands and Chessington

Pay: £110-£125 per day

Start Date: ASAP

Contract: Full-time, long-term temporary with potential to become permanent

Long Term Futures is recruiting an experienced SEND Teaching Assistant to join a supportive primary school in Surbiton, KT5. This is a dedicated support role working closely with a pupil who presents with challenging behaviour and additional needs.

The successful candidate will need to be confident managing behaviour, recognising triggers and responding calmly when situations escalate. Previous SEND experience is essential for this position.

This role would suit someone who is resilient, consistent and able to build a trusting relationship with a pupil while maintaining clear boundaries and expectations.

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will:

- Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a primary-aged pupil with SEND

- Support a pupil who can display challenging and dysregulated behaviour

- Identify triggers and use proactive strategies to reduce escalation

- Implement consistent positive behaviour support throughout the school day

- Use appropriate de-escalation and emotional regulation strategies

- Help the pupil access classroom learning through adapted activities and individualised support

- Follow strategies outlined within the pupil's EHCP and behaviour/support plans

- Support transitions, changes to routine and less structured periods of the day

- Encourage positive communication, social interaction and independence

- Record progress, behaviour patterns and relevant observations

- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, the SENCo and wider pastoral/SEND team

- Previous experience supporting children with SEND is essential

- Experience working with challenging behaviour is strongly preferred

- Background as a SEND TA, SEN TA, Learning Support Assistant, Behaviour Mentor or similar

- Understanding of needs such as Autism, ADHD, SEMH and emotional regulation difficulties

- Confident delivering intensive 1:1 support

- Able to remain calm and consistent during incidents of heightened behaviour

- Knowledge of positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies

- Team Teach, PRICE, MAPA or similar positive handling training would be advantageous

- Patient and resilient, with the ability to establish clear professional boundaries

- Reliable and committed to providing consistency for the pupil

- Able to commute reliably to Surbiton, KT5

- Inclusive primary school in the Surbiton area
