A highly regarded primary school in the Didcot area is looking for a 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated part-time support to a pupil with additional needs.

This is an opportunity to become a consistent and trusted presence in a child's school day, helping them access learning, develop confidence and participate more independently in school life.

Effective 1:1 support isn't about following a pupil around all day or completing tasks for them.

It's about understanding how that individual child learns, communicates and responds to the world around them.

You'll work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to provide support shaped around the pupil's individual needs and agreed outcomes.

Depending on those needs, your day could involve:

- Providing dedicated 1:1 support during classroom learning.

- Breaking instructions and activities into more manageable stages.

- Delivering targeted interventions.

- Adapting resources and activities to improve accessibility.

- Using visual, practical or multisensory approaches where appropriate.

- Supporting communication and social interaction.

- Helping the pupil manage transitions and changes in routine.

- Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour.

- Encouraging participation in lessons and wider school activities.

- Building confidence while promoting greater independence.

- Observing and recording progress.

- Sharing useful feedback with the class teacher and SENCO.

- Working collaboratively with parents, carers and other professionals where required.

One of the most important skills in 1:1 SEND support is knowing how much help to give.

Sometimes a child will need you alongside them.

Sometimes they'll need an activity presented differently.

Sometimes they'll need reassurance before they're willing to try.

And sometimes the best thing you can do is take a small step backwards and give them the opportunity to discover:

"I can do this myself."

You'll need to balance being supportive and nurturing with maintaining expectations and encouraging independence.

We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys getting to know an individual child and finding the approaches that help them succeed.

Previous experience supporting pupils with SEND within a school or similar environment would be highly desirable.

You may already have experience as a:

SEND Teaching Assistant • 1:1 Teaching Assistant • Learning Support Assistant • SEN TA • Classroom Support Assistant

You'll ideally bring:

- Experience supporting children with SEND.

- An understanding of individualised and inclusive support.

- Patience and the ability to remain calm when a child is struggling.

- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

- The ability to follow agreed strategies consistently.

- Confidence adapting your approach when something isn't working.

- An understanding of positive behaviour support.

- Good observational and record-keeping skills.

- The ability to work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCO and other professionals.

- A genuine commitment to helping children become more confident and independent.

Relevant qualifications in education, SEND or a related area would be advantageous, alongside an understanding of the SEND Code of Practice.

A part-time role doesn't mean playing a small part in a child's education.

Consistency can be incredibly important for pupils with additional needs.

Knowing who will be there.

Understanding the routine.

Having an adult who recognises when something isn't quite right.

And developing a relationship with someone who understands how they learn best.
