If you're interested in working with children and young people but aren't yet sure which direction you want your Psychology degree to take you, gaining practical experience could be a useful next step.
We're recruiting a Psychology Graduate to work within an education setting in Farnborough, supporting children and young people who may have additional learning, behavioural, communication or emotional needs.
This isn't a desk-based psychology role.
It's an opportunity to take some of what you've studied - development, behaviour, cognition, communication, attachment, mental health and individual differences - and see how it presents in real young people, in a real education environment.
You'll spend your days working directly with pupils.
That might mean supporting a young person who finds it difficult to regulate their emotions. Helping a pupil understand and complete a classroom task. Observing patterns in behaviour. Providing structured 1:1 support. Or helping someone develop the confidence to participate alongside their peers.
You'll see first-hand how factors such as SEND, communication, emotional wellbeing, environment and relationships can affect a young person's ability to learn.
You'll also learn something that's difficult to get from a textbook: the same approach won't work for every child.
Your responsibilities could include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group pupil support.
- Supporting learning and engagement during lessons.
- Helping pupils with SEND access classroom activities.
- Supporting positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
- Delivering structured interventions under the guidance of experienced staff.
- Observing pupils and feeding relevant information back to teachers and support professionals.
- Helping young people develop communication and social skills.
- Encouraging confidence and greater independence.
- Working alongside teachers, SEND staff and other professionals.
- Maintaining appropriate records relating to pupil support and progress.
You'll receive guidance and training, so you won't be expected to arrive knowing everything.
What we will expect is curiosity, professionalism and a genuine willingness to understand the young people you're working with.
Experience working directly with children and young people can be valuable if you're considering future training or careers within areas such as:

It can also help you work out whether a child-focused career is actually right for you before committing to further postgraduate study.
You'll need a degree in Psychology or a closely related discipline and a genuine interest in working with children and young people.
You'll also need to communicate confidently, remain calm when situations are challenging and be prepared to adapt your approach to different pupils.
Previous experience with children, SEND, mental health, care, mentoring or youth work would be useful, but isn't necessarily the only route into the role.
£100 per day. Full-time. Weekly pay. Free training and ongoing support.
