Are you a passionate and resilient Learning Support Assistant looking for a rewarding opportunity supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?
We are currently recruiting on behalf of a modern specialist SEMH provision in Hartlepool, supporting young people who may have experienced barriers to education and require a nurturing, personalised approach to learning.
The provision has a strong focus on kindness, resilience, personal responsibility and developing a growth mindset, with an exciting curriculum that embraces outdoor education, nature, horticulture and animal care alongside academic and vocational learning.
We are looking for dedicated LSAs who can build strong relationships with young people, support their emotional wellbeing and help them develop the confidence and skills they need to achieve their personal best.
The Role
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff to provide personalised support to students, helping them engage with learning and overcome barriers associated with SEMH needs.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to students.
- Supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.
- Building positive, trusting and consistent relationships with students.
- Supporting students to understand and manage their emotions.
- Encouraging positive behaviour and helping students develop emotional resilience.
- Supporting students to engage with their learning and achieve their individual potential.
- Helping students develop independence, confidence and personal responsibility.
- Supporting learning both inside and outside of the classroom.
- Getting involved in outdoor and practical learning activities where appropriate.
- Encouraging students to develop their communication, literacy and oracy skills.
- Supporting students with preparation for adulthood, further education, employment and positive destinations.
- Working closely with teachers, families and other professionals to ensure students receive consistent support.
- Maintaining a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment for all students.
About You
We are looking for someone who is patient, empathetic, resilient and passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to education.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience working with children or young people, ideally within an SEMH, SEN, alternative provision, care or support setting.
- A strong understanding of the importance of positive relationships when supporting young people.
- The ability to remain calm and consistent when faced with challenging behaviour or heightened emotions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A nurturing and non-judgemental approach.
- The confidence to encourage and motivate students who may have previously struggled within education.
- A flexible approach and willingness to adapt support to meet individual needs.
- A genuine commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a supportive team.
- A positive attitude and a growth mindset of your own.
Experience of supporting young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour, trauma, anxiety, ADHD or other additional needs would be highly desirable.
