The Job
We are recruiting on behalf of a well established family run dairy farm in Cheshire who are looking for an experienced Herdsperson to join their existing team. The successful candidate will join an established team and take an active role in the day-to-day management of the herd. This is a hands on position suited to someone who enjoys working with cows and wants to take genuine responsibility within a progressive dairy business.
Key responsibilities:
- Day to day care and management of the dairy herd
- Milking and general livestock husbandry
- Monitoring cow health, fertility and performance
- Working with herd data and maintaining accurate records
- Supporting foot trimming, fertility work and routine herd health
- Heat detection and monitoring of cows
- Calf and youngstock work when required
- Supporting the grazing system and day-to-day movement of stock
- Identifying health issues and taking appropriate action
- Working closely with the Farm Owner and existing team
- Maintaining high standards of animal welfare, hygiene and biosecurity
- General farm duties as required
The Company:
This is a well run, commercial dairy unit operating a grazing-based system, with a strong focus on herd health, fertility, data and overall cow performance. The farm operates a block calving system, with calving taking place through the summer, and the role will suit someone who is comfortable working around seasonal peaks in workload. There is currently an established team on farm, and the successful candidate will be expected to work as part of the team while also being able to use their own initiative and take responsibility for the herd.
The Candidate
- Previous experience working within a commercial dairy herd
- Strong practical livestock and milking skills
- Good knowledge of cow health, fertility and heat detection
- Experience with herd records and data
- Confidence carrying out routine treatments and herd health tasks
- A good understanding of grazing-based dairy systems
- The ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- A genuine passion for dairy farming and animal welfare
- A reliable and proactive approach to their work
- Good communication skills
This would suit someone looking for a long term position where they can become an important part of the farming team and have genuine responsibility within the herd.
The Package
- Salary £30,000-£40,000 DOE
- Approximately 50 hours per week
- Established and experienced farm team

Candidate Requirements
All applicants must hold a minimum of an NVQ Level 2, Scottish NVQ Level 2, or an equivalent qualification relevant to the role applied for. Candidates must also have the legal right to work in the UK or hold a valid visa permitting employment.
