Summary

The Clinical Fellow (FY2 or CT/ST1-2 Level) in Urology is a fixed-term training and service post within the Bristol Urological Institute at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. The post offers an excellent opportunity to develop clinical and surgical skills within a busy tertiary urology service, providing exposure to both elective and emergency urological care.

Working under the supervision of experienced consultants and senior clinicians, the postholder will contribute to the assessment, investigation and management of patients across inpatient wards, emergency admissions, outpatient clinics and operating theatres. The role includes participation in the resident on-call rota and provides opportunities to develop competencies in the management of acute urological conditions, peri-operative care and common urological procedures.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the postholder will work collaboratively with medical, nursing and allied health professional colleagues to deliver safe, effective and compassionate patient care. The role also supports participation in teaching, audit, quality improvement and continuing professional development within a university teaching hospital.

This post is well suited to doctors who have completed Foundation training (or equivalent) and wish to gain further experience in urology, whether as preparation for a career in surgery or to develop specialist skills applicable to a range of medical careers.

As a Clinical Fellow in Urology, you will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality care within a busy tertiary urology service.

Key responsibilities include:

• Assessing and managing patients with elective and emergency urological conditions.

• Providing day-to-day care for urology inpatients, including ward rounds, patient reviews and discharge planning.

• Participating in the resident on-call rota with appropriate senior support.

• Contributing to patient care across inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and operating theatres.

• Assisting with and developing competence in a range of urological procedures and surgical techniques under supervision.

• Working collaboratively with consultants, trainees, nursing staff and allied health professionals to deliver safe, patient-centred care.

• Participating in teaching, clinical audit, quality improvement and departmental education activities.

• Maintaining accurate clinical records and ensuring effective communication with patients, relatives and colleagues.

The postholder will work as part of the Bristol Urological Institute, supporting the delivery of elective and emergency urology services across the Trust. Working under appropriate clinical supervision, the Clinical Fellow will contribute to the care of patients throughout their pathway, developing clinical and procedural skills while delivering safe, effective and compassionate care.

The role will include:

• Providing medical care for urology inpatients, including clinical review, investigation, treatment planning and discharge coordination.

• Assessing and managing patients presenting with acute urological conditions, seeking senior support where appropriate.

• Supporting the delivery of elective and emergency operating lists through peri-operative patient management and supervised procedural experience.

• Attending outpatient clinics to develop diagnostic and management skills across a broad range of urological conditions.

• Participating in the resident on-call rota and ensuring continuity of care through effective clinical handover.

• Working collaboratively with consultants, trainees, nursing, theatre and allied health professional colleagues to deliver coordinated patient care.

• Maintaining accurate clinical documentation and complying with Trust policies, professional standards and GMC guidance.

• Contributing to multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities.

• Supporting the teaching and supervision of medical students and more junior colleagues where appropriate.

• Maintaining mandatory training and engaging in continuing professional development to support personal learning objectives and service delivery.

The postholder will be expected to demonstrate professionalism, effective communication and a commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. They will also be expected to contribute flexibly to the service in response to operational needs while working within the limits of their competence and seeking senior advice when required.
