THE NORTH WEST (ENGLAND) AND NORTH WALES PAEDIATRIC TRANSPORT SERVICE (NWTS) This service provides a dedicated paediatric intensive care stabilisation and transport service for critically sick or injured children in the North West (England) and North Wales Region. It works closely with the region’s two paediatric intensive care units, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The service has been established to support and provide high quality care and/or advice for critically sick or injured children and their families from the first point of contact with secondary care and during their transportation to an appropriate PICU. NWTS provides a single point of contact for referring hospitals with consultant-led specialist advice on stabilisation, transport, and triaging facilities for all referrals at all times. The service receives approximately 1,400 referrals and undertakes approximately 500 transfers annually from the 29 Local Hospitals and Urgent Care Centres in the region into the two tertiary hospitals within the North West. NWTS works closely with both the referring hospitals and the two providers of paediatric intensive care in the region, and is part of the Paediatric Critical Care, Children’s Major Trauma and Congenital Cardiac Networks in region. Duties will include providing direct clinical care and consultant advice and support for the NWTS transport service. Approximately 45-50% of referrals to NWTS are for advice on patient management only. Patients are followed up for a minimum of 24 hours following referral to track whether they have improved or deteriorated and need escalation of care. NWTS consultants will join the team for retrieval where appropriate. The successful candidate will join the team providing 24-hour consultant cover for NWTS 365 days a year – including weekends and bank holidays. A Vacancy at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. 4 posts 2 posts to start January / February 2027 2 posts to start September 2027 NWTS Senior Locally Employed Doctor (SLED) post is a full-time post with NWTS and is ideal for senior trainees (ideally post-CCT) in anaesthetics, paediatrics, emergency medicine, pre-hospital medicine and paediatric or adult intensive care medicine, who want to gain further experience in the management of the acutely sick child and transport medicine. The SLED is an integral part of the multidisciplinary paediatric critical care regional transport team, and the main role of the clinical fellow is to manage all aspects of a transfer, including giving advice at the initial referral call, co-ordinating the logistics of transport, stabilising the patient and ensuring a safe, efficient and cohesive transfer from referring centre to the accepting intensive care unit. It is expected that the clinical fellow will take an interest in an audit, guideline or quality assurance projects. In addition, the clinical fellow is part of the NWTS education team and is expected to be involved with the design and delivery of a wide variety of education and training projects run by NWTS. Due to the short-term nature of the role, the successful candidate must hold a current registration with the GMC at the time of application, whether it be an active licence, ceased licence or a pending application -MFT cannot support GMC Sponsorship for vacancies less than 12 months fixed term. Role will involve working on a rotational shift system. Shift pattern includes long days (7:30 to 20:00), nights (20:00 to 08:00), twilight shift 11:30 - 00:00 and educational days.
