Summary
Field Technical Service Engineer – Specialist Safety Products (325lw) – Midlands – up to £44,000 DOE + 6k Car allowance + Benefits
Are you a practical engineer who enjoys investigating faults, solving technical problems and understanding why something isn’t working - rather than simply following an installation process?
DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS RECRUITMENT CONSULTANCY, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO REPRESENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EX MILITARY.
We’re recruiting two Field Technical Services Engineers on behalf of a growing specialist engineering business that designs and supplies safety products for environments where reliability is critical, including hospitals, mental-health facilities, schools and secure settings.
This is an opportunity to join a business with a clear purpose: helping protect people during vulnerable times through dependable products, thoughtful design and excellent technical support.
The role
Home-based with regular UK-wide travel – ideally, you will be based in the Midlands (near Derby or Birmingham). You’ll combine hands-on engineering with technical investigation, customer support and problem-solving. You’ll typically spend 2–4 days per week on customer sites, with occasional overnight stays.
Your responsibilities will include
Servicing, commissioning, inspecting and rectifying mechanical, electrical and electronic products.
Independently diagnosing faults, investigating possible causes and using evidence-led root cause analysis to identify lasting solutions.
Distinguishing product faults from installation, configuration, maintenance, environmental or user-related issues.
Providing remote technical support, documenting findings and seeing issues through to resolution or appropriate escalation.
Delivering practical product training to customers, installers and service partners.
Identifying recurring problems and sharing technical insights with internal Product, Quality and Engineering teams.
You won’t need to know every product from day one. What matters is strong practical engineering ability, sound judgement, curiosity and a methodical approach to troubleshooting.
Who we’re looking for
You’ll have experience in a hands-on engineering environment, such as field service, maintenance, commissioning, installation, repair or technical product support. You’ll be confident working independently, communicating with customers and explaining technical findings clearly.
Experience across mechanical and electrical/electronic systems would be valuable, as would exposure to doors, architectural ironmongery, access control, electronic locking, alarms, low-voltage systems or connected products.
Ex-military engineers and service leavers are encouraged to apply. If you’ve worked with equipment maintenance, engineering support, technical inspection, testing, fault diagnosis or repair in the Armed Forces, your skills may transfer particularly well. Civilian experience is welcome, but above all, we’re looking for someone who can demonstrate hands-on technical ability and independently investigate and resolve problems.
You’ll need a full UK driving licence, a willingness to travel regularly and the professionalism to work safely in live healthcare, mental-health and other controlled environments.
If you are interested in applying, please send a copy of your CV with a note outlining why this would be the ideal opportunity for you to Liz Walsh at Ex-Mil Recruitment Ltd or by email to liz@ex-mil.co.uk
