Senior Pensions Officer (Member Services - Retirements & Deaths)

Lead a Service That Makes a Difference

Derbyshire Pension Fund is seeking an experienced and motivated pensions professional to join our management team as a Senior Pensions Officer.

This is a key leadership position in our Member Services Team, leading the Retirements & Deaths work area and ensuring the delivery of a high quality service to members and beneficiaries.

This is an exciting opportunity to manage one of the Fund's important operational teams, delivering high-quality pension administration services to over 98,000 members and 400 participating employers within the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).

As the lead officer for the Retirements & Deaths team, you will play a vital role in ensuring members and their families receive an efficient, compassionate and professional service at some of the significant times in their lives.

About the Role

Reporting to the Pensions Services Manager, you will lead and manage a team responsible for the administration of retirement and death benefits within the LGPS.

You will oversee the delivery of a complex and varied workload, ensuring benefits are calculated accurately and paid promptly, whilst maintaining compliance with LGPS regulations and internal procedures.

As the Fund's subject matter expert for retirement and death administration, you will provide technical guidance, support service improvement initiatives, and work closely with colleagues, employers and stakeholders to enhance the member experience.

Key responsibilities include:

•    Leading, managing and developing a team of pensions professionals.

•    Ensuring the timely and accurate processing of retirement and death benefit cases.

•    Monitoring team performance and service standards to achieve operational targets.

•    Providing expert technical advice on LGPS regulations and pension administration matters.

•    Supporting the implementation of legislative and procedural changes.

•    Identifying opportunities to improve processes, efficiency and service delivery.

•    Managing complex and sensitive member enquiries and escalations.

•    Collaborating with other operational teams to ensure a seamless member journey.

About You

We are looking for an individual with:

•    Significant experience in Local Government Pension Scheme administration.

•    Detailed knowledge of LGPS legislation and pension administration practices.

•    Experience of leading, managing or mentoring colleagues within a pension administration environment.

•    Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.

•    The ability to interpret and apply complex pension regulations.

•    Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to engage effectively with members, employers and stakeholders.

•    A commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.

•    A proactive approach to service improvement and change management.

Why Join Derbyshire Pension Fund?

This is an excellent opportunity to take a leading role in a large LGPS fund and help shape the future of pension service delivery.

As an employee of Derbyshire County Council, you'll benefit from:

•    Hybrid working: Enjoy the flexibility of our Modern Ways of Working programme, with a mix of office and remote work.

•    Generous annual leave entitlement: Benefit from a competitive leave package that supports a healthy work-life balance.

•    Local Government Pension Scheme membership: Secure your future through one of the UK's most valued public sector pension schemes.

•    Employee discounts and benefits: Access a wide range of discounts, offers and wellbeing initiatives through our employee benefits programme.

•    Supportive and collaborative culture: Join a friendly team committed to delivering excellent outcomes for members, employers and colleagues alike.
