Location: Frome, Somerset

Pay: £100 – £120 per day

Hours: 8:30am – 4pm, plus 40–60 minutes of report writing after sessions

Contract: Temporary, day-to-day supply

Start date: ASAP, ongoing

Essential: Happy to work outdoors all day in all weathers

Luma Education Recruitment is looking for an Outdoor Learning Teaching Assistant to work supply days across two forest school settings on the outskirts of Frome, Somerset. Work starts as soon as possible and carries on day-to-day, including cover when permanent staff are off sick. Sessions with children run from 9:30am to 3pm in woodland and growing spaces, with setting up beforehand and packing down and a team evaluation afterwards. On some days you could spend the morning with one setting and the afternoon with the other.

About the Settings

The two providers are small, community-run outdoor education projects that work closely together and share supply staff. Their sessions use outdoor games, practical tasks and challenges to help children grow in confidence and develop social skills and emotional literacy, alongside a respect for the local natural environment.

The Opportunity

- Supporting children through child-led forest school sessions, responding to what they want to explore

- Preparing the site in the morning and clearing equipment away at the end of the day

- Helping with den building, tool work, campfire activities and nature exploration, directed by the lead practitioner

- Following risk assessments and keeping children safe in an outdoor environment

- Taking part in the end-of-day evaluation and writing session reports (around 40–60 minutes)

What You'll Need

- Experience as a Teaching Assistant, forest school assistant or outdoor educator working with children

- An understanding of, and comfort with, child-led learning

- Suitable outdoor clothing and footwear, and enthusiasm for a full day outside

- Clear written communication for session reports

- Flexibility to pick up day-to-day supply work, sometimes at short notice

- Forest School Level 1–3 or outdoor first aid training would be helpful but is not essential

The settings are looking for a calm, patient and observant person who enjoys the outdoors and is happy to let children lead. You'll meet the team before any booking, and may spend a paid session with them first, so everyone can be sure of the fit.
