Summary

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join the Royal Free London's specialist Liver Transplant Unit as a permanent, part-time specialist practitioner in substance misuse and liver transplantation. This is a unique opportunity to work at the interface of hepatology, liver transplantation, substance misuse and mental health within a highly specialised service caring for some of the most complex patients across the region and nationally.

The successful post holder will bring either established expertise in liver transplantation or extensive specialist knowledge and experience in substance misuse, together with a genuine passion for developing expertise in liver transplant. We are particularly keen to attract an experienced clinician who is enthusiastic about learning, developing and ultimately becoming a nationally recognised expert in substance misuse within liver transplantation.

Working 22.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, flexible working requests will be considered wherever possible.

This is an exceptional opportunity to influence the development of specialist substance misuse provision within a leading liver transplant service, contribute to service innovation, education and research, and help shape best practice nationally.

Key responsibilities will include conducting comprehensive psycho-social and addiction assessments, contributing specialist advice to multidisciplinary decision-making and supporting the assessment of suitability and readiness for liver transplantation. The post holder will ensure patients receive coordinated support before and following transplantation.

The role will lead the development and delivery of a specialist substance misuse service within the Liver Transplant Unit, working collaboratively with transplant consultants, hepatologists, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

The successful candidate will provide teaching, education, consultation and clinical supervision, sharing specialist knowledge with the liver team and wider professional networks. They will support the development of evidence-based practice and contribute to clinical research, service evaluation and quality improvement relating to transplantation, substance misuse and mental health.

The post holder will directly line manage one Band 7 CNS and provide clinical supervision and professional support to the Alcohol Liaison Team encouraging and facilitating cross team cover.

The post holder will champion compassionate, evidence-based care and maintain the service reputation as a centre of excellence for substance misuse in liver transplantation, with opportunities to develop national expertise and influence practice beyond the organisation.
