Summary

Applications are invited for a fixed-term 9 PA (0.9 WTE) Locum Consultant Hepatologist post, jointly hosted by Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Barts Health NHS Trust. This exciting new joint appointment has been developed to strengthen hepatology services across both organisations and support the continued delivery of high-quality inpatient and outpatient care.

The post holder will work alongside the established hepatology teams at Homerton University Hospital and The Royal London Hospital, providing care for patients with general hepatology conditions. The role will have a 70:20 split in clinical commitment between Homerton and The Royal London Hospital, with the majority of clinical activity based at Homerton.

The post holder will undertake teaching duties for undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff, as well as other professional groups including nursing and pharmacy colleagues. They will also contribute to local research projects and support the ongoing development of hepatology services across both Trusts. This new joint post offers an exciting opportunity to work across two leading organisations, helping to shape and further develop integrated hepatology services for the local population.

The successful candidate will be required to:

1. Maintain full GMC registration and is advised to retain membership of a medical defence organisation.

2. Take continuing responsibility for patients in their care, including all associated administrative duties.

3. Provide leadership and organisation of services in line with Trust business plans, working closely with Lead Clinicians, General Managers and Clinical Directors.

4. Take corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of junior doctors supporting the hepatology service.

5. Provide consultant hepatology services at the Royal London Hospital (RLH), including inpatient and outpatient care.

6. Provide hepatology, endoscopy and acute/inpatient care at Homerton University Hospital.

7. Support delivery of shared care protocols across North East London.

8. Participate in and lead local MDTs within relevant disease areas.

9. Contribute to general hepatology outpatient clinics across Barts Health and the acute hepatology inpatient rota at RLH, including daily consultant-led ward rounds, weekend cover on a rota, assessment of new referrals from the general medical take, and review of existing hepatology inpatients.

10. Participate in the out-of-hours endoscopy on-call rota.

11. Participate in departmental clinical trials and research activities.

The post holder will also undertake appropriate administrative and management duties and contribute to the wider management and service development of the hospital.

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (HH) is an acute hospital based in Hackney, East London. The current Chairman is Mary Elford and the Chief Executive is Ms Basirat Sadiq.

The Trust employs over 4,000 staff and has approximately 500 beds, as well as managing the 50-bed Mary Seacole Nursing Home in Shoreditch. It provides care across hospital and community settings. In 2022, the Trust delivered over 300,000 outpatient appointments, treated more than 126,000 patients in A&E and had contact with over 280,000 patients and clients through community services, many in their own homes.

The Trust has an annual income of approximately £500–550 million and reported a year-end deficit of £12.9 million in 2024/25.

Homerton provides a comprehensive range of general acute services for the local population, alongside specialist services for patients across a wider area. These include level 3 neonatal intensive care and perinatal services, fertility, bariatric and laparoscopic surgery, stroke and neurorehabilitation. The hospital has three day-surgery theatres and five main operating theatres supporting general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, maxillofacial surgery, urology, ENT and obstetrics. It also has a 10-bed combined adult intensive care/high dependency unit.

The Trust’s community services provide a broad range of adult and children’s services, many delivered in partnership with organisations across the local health and social care system.

Locum Consultant Hepatologist responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatient hepatology services across Homerton Healthcare and Royal London Hospital (RLH) . The role includes acute hepatology, endoscopy, multidisciplinary working, service development, clinical governance, teaching and participation in clinical trials.

Key responsibilities include maintaining full GMC registration; providing continuing responsibility for patients and associated administrative duties; providing consultant-led inpatient and outpatient hepatology care at RLH; delivering endoscopy and acute/inpatient hepatology care at Homerton; contributing to general hepatology clinics across Barts Health and the acute hepatology rota at RLH, including consultant-led ward rounds, weekend cover and assessment of new referrals and existing inpatients.

The post holder will participate in the out-of-hours endoscopy on-call rota, lead and participate in local MDTs, support shared care protocols across North East London, and contribute to clinical trials. The role also includes leadership and development of hepatology services in line with Trust plans, liaison with clinical and managerial colleagues, and professional management and supervision of junior doctors. The post holder will undertake appropriate administrative and management duties and contribute to wider hospital management and service development.
