Summary
What's involved with this role:
Litigation Lawyer
Location: Manchester
Ref: 8161
Rate: Competitive
Contract: 3 months (possibility to extend)
Working Pattern: Full-time
Hybrid Working: Remote working with occasional on-site attendance for court, mediations
The Role
We are supporting a local authority seeking an experienced Civil Litigation Lawyer to join its busy Litigation Team on an interim basis. This assignment requires a confident litigator with strong public-sector experience who can quickly integrate into a fast-paced environment and manage a varied caseload with minimal supervision.
You will handle a broad range of civil litigation matters including contract disputes, judicial review defence, property litigation and debt recovery. As the authority does not hold housing stock, housing-related work will focus on homelessness matters and First-tier Tribunal appeals (typically relating to improvement notices). Experience across criminal, regulatory, school attendance and licensing work would be advantageous, though not essential.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled litigator seeking a predominantly remote interim role with meaningful, high-impact work.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a diverse civil litigation caseload including contract disputes, judicial review defence, property litigation and debt claims.
Provide clear, timely and practical legal advice to internal clients across a wide range of contentious matters.
Prepare, draft and review legal documentation including pleadings, witness statements, reports and correspondence.
Represent the authority at court hearings, mediations and tribunals as required.
Handle homelessness-related litigation and FTT appeals, particularly in relation to improvement notices.
Conduct legal research, analyse legislation and case law, and advise on implications for ongoing matters.
Work collaboratively within the litigation team, supporting colleagues and contributing to effective case progression.
Adapt quickly to changing priorities, managing workload effectively in a high-pressure environment.
You Will Need (Essential Requirements)
Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with Civil Litigation practising rights.
Strong experience working within a local authority litigation team.
Proven ability to manage a substantial and varied contentious caseload independently.
Comprehensive knowledge of civil litigation principles, legislation, case law and public-sector legal frameworks.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and liaise confidently at all levels.
Desirable Experience
Exposure to criminal, regulatory, school attendance or licensing matters.
Experience handling homelessness litigation or FTT appeals.
Strong research and investigative skills with high attention to detail.
Ability to navigate specialist legal databases and case management systems.
