Summary
Job title: Salaried General Practitioner Employer: The Ridgeway Surgery, Harrow Contract: 12-month fixed-term employment contract Hours: Six sessions per week, worked on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays Location: The Ridgeway Surgery and Alexandra Avenue Health and Social Care Centre Accountable to: The GP Partners Purpose of the role To provide safe, effective and patient-centred general medical services, working collaboratively with the practices multidisciplinary team. The postholder will assess and manage acute and ongoing health problems, support prevention and health promotion, and contribute to the quality and development of practice services. The six sessions must be worked on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to meet the practices clinical cover requirements. Clinical responsibilities Undertake face-to-face, telephone and online consultations, using clinical judgement to determine the appropriate consultation method and any need for further assessment. Assess, diagnose and manage patients presenting with acute illness and long-term conditions. Develop management plans with patients, taking account of their preferences, circumstances and clinical needs. Recognise clinical deterioration and arrange urgent assessment or escalation where appropriate. Provide clear safety-netting advice and arrange appropriate follow-up. Undertake home visits where clinically appropriate, in accordance with practice arrangements. Make appropriate referrals and coordinate care with other healthcare professionals and services. Support preventative care, screening, immunisation and health promotion. Prescribe safely and effectively, taking account of current guidance, local formularies and individual patient needs. Support continuity of care and effective handover of outstanding clinical issues. Work within professional competence and seek advice or support when required. Clinical administration Maintain accurate, timely and relevant clinical records using the practices electronic clinical system. Review and act on investigation results, clinical correspondence and other information requiring GP input. Complete referrals, prescriptions, reports and other clinical documentation appropriately and promptly. Manage allocated clinical tasks and ensure that outstanding actions are followed up or handed over safely. Use clinical coding appropriately to support patient care, record quality and practice reporting. Follow practice processes for medication reviews, repeat prescribing and monitoring. Maintain confidentiality and handle patient information in accordance with practice policies and applicable requirements. Teamworking and service delivery Work collaboratively with GP partners, other GPs, advanced clinical practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, healthcare assistants, care navigators and administrative colleagues. Contribute to clinical meetings, case discussions and effective communication across the team. Provide appropriate clinical advice to colleagues within the scope of the role. Support coordinated care for patients with complex needs and those receiving input from multiple services. Contribute to the effective operation of the practices appointment and access arrangements. Use practice systems and digital tools appropriately, undertaking relevant training. Participate in agreed arrangements for urgent clinical cover during contracted sessions. Safeguarding and professional responsibilities Recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns involving children and adults. Follow local safeguarding pathways and practice procedures, documenting concerns and actions clearly. Maintain professional registration, appropriate indemnity arrangements and eligibility to practise as a GP. Work in accordance with GMC professional standards and relevant clinical guidance. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and respect patients dignity, autonomy and individual needs. Promote equality and respond sensitively to patients from different backgrounds. Raise concerns about patient safety or professional practice through appropriate channels. Follow practice policies relating to infection prevention, health and safety, confidentiality and information governance. Quality improvement and clinical governance Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement relevant to the role and practice priorities. Contribute to significant event reviews and learning from complaints, incidents and patient feedback. Support the delivery of evidence-based care and agreed clinical standards. Contribute to improvements in access, prescribing, long-term condition management and coordination of care. Engage constructively with changes to services and working arrangements. Support the practice in maintaining the quality and safety of its services. Learning and development Maintain continuing professional development and engage with appraisal and revalidation requirements. Complete mandatory training relevant to the role. Identify learning needs and discuss development opportunities with the practice. Contribute to teaching and supervision where agreed and appropriate to experience, competence and any required accreditation. Share relevant learning with colleagues. Fixed-term nature of the appointment This is a 12-month fixed-term appointment while the practice reviews its longer-term clinical staffing requirements. The review will take account of anticipated neighbourhood service developments, premises plans and the practices financial position. The outcome will inform whether future clinical provision involves salaried GP roles, partnership or a different level of clinical capacity. Extension of this contract or a permanent salaried appointment cannot be guaranteed.
