Summary
Manchester has produced 109 applicants to WoofWalk in six days, more than anywhere but London, and 34 of them have set up a walking business, from Salford and Bury out to Oldham and Stockport. We would like ten more, spread across the boroughs rather than all in the centre.
Here is the honest shape of it. WoofWalk is a booking app, not an employer. You are self-employed. You set the price of a walk, a drop-in visit or a night of sitting, you pick the hours you can really do, and owners near you book through the app and pay through it. There is no wage and no guaranteed work; what you earn depends on the bookings you accept.
Fifteen Manchester walkers have already put prices up, mostly from £10 to £15 for a walk. Sitter sites list Manchester half-hour walks at around £8 to £20. Your price is yours to choose.
Walks tend to happen in Heaton Park, Platt Fields, Clayton Vale and Fletcher Moss. Manchester's dog control order makes it an offence to take more than four dogs onto its land at once, so group walks are capped at four.
Joining costs nothing. Your first two weeks are commission-free; after that WoofWalk keeps 15% of each booking, and once five clients have joined through you it drops to 10% for life. Tax, National Insurance and insurance are yours to sort out.
Suits anyone over 18 who is free in the middle of the day, which is when owners need walkers most.
