We’re looking for an experienced Environmental Enforcement Officer to investigate and tackle environmental crime, helping to improve the local environment and quality of life.
You’ll take the lead on cases involving fly-tipping, littering, illegal waste activity, nuisance and environmental pollution, gathering evidence, carrying out investigations and taking appropriate enforcement action. You’ll also prepare and serve notices, undertake site visits and surveillance, interview offenders and witnesses, and support prosecutions and legal proceedings.
Key Responsibilities
Investigate environmental offences and service requests, gathering robust evidence for enforcement and prosecution.
Prepare and serve statutory and fixed penalty notices.
Conduct site inspections, surveillance and monitoring, including the use of CCTV and digital evidence.
Lead investigations and support legal proceedings, including giving evidence at court or tribunals.
Interview offenders and witnesses, including under PACE.
Supervise remedial works and contractors and support works in default.
Provide clear advice and guidance to residents, businesses and partner organisations.
Work collaboratively with enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to tackle environmental crime.
About You
You’ll have practical experience of environmental, regulatory or enforcement work, with a strong understanding of evidence gathering, legislation and enforcement procedures. A relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent is desirable, although candidates with at least 3 years’ experience working within regulatory, enforcement or legal systems will also be considered.
You’ll need to be confident working independently, making sound decisions, managing investigations and communicating effectively with members of the public and other stakeholders.
Full driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle are essential. The role involves mobile working, outdoor visits and potentially challenging situations, including occasions where conflict may arise.
