Summary
Have you delivered infrastructure or security projects such as CCTV, access control or intruder alarms, and are you ready to lead one across some of the UK's science museums?
About us
The Science Museum Group is the world's leading group of science museums. It brings together the Science Museum in London, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, the National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion in Shildon and the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford. Our Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton is home to much of our world-class collection. Every year, millions of visitors come through our doors to explore stories of science, technology, engineering and innovation. Our mission is to inspire futures, and we care for our collection so that people everywhere can enjoy it for generations to come.
Our ICT team supports all of this behind the scenes. We look after the systems and infrastructure that keep our museums, collections, staff and visitors connected and secure.
About the role
We are looking for an ICT Project Manager to deliver the Groupwide Security Project, using best-practice project management methodology. Working with stakeholders, you will agree requirements and scope for specific projects and lead delivery from initiation through to transition into business as usual.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to new security deliverables across the Science Museum Group. Alongside senior representatives from our Estates and Security Teams, you will deliver infrastructure changes to our museum whilst reviewing process and procedure change. Although the role is based in Manchester or York, occasional travel to other museums within the Science Museum Group will be required.
You will maintain project momentum to ensure delivery on time, within scope and within budget. You will also ensure that any changes are managed through clear and robust governance structures. Working with the wider ICT PMO, you will manage stakeholders across the ICT team and the wider organisation through regular formal and informal communication. You will use your experience to support and lead technical project teams in a hybrid working environment, helping to maintain productivity and meet key targets.
This is a full-time, fixed-term role until 31 March 2028, with a salary of £49,379 per annum. You can be based at either the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester or the National Railway Museum in York. The role offers hybrid working, with two days a week on site and three working from home. You'll also need to travel regularly between our museums across the North of England.
About you
We're keen to see applications from candidates who have hands-on, applied project management experience and can hit the ground running. As this is a fixed-term role, we're looking for someone who can step in, get to grips with the project quickly and have a clear project plan in place from the outset. You'll have a proven track record of delivering ICT infrastructure projects using best-practice methods such as PRINCE2 and Agile, or equivalent. Experience of security-focused projects, such as CCTV, access control, intruder alarms and their associated security protocols, would be a real advantage. However, if your background is in wider infrastructure delivery, we'd still love to hear from you. You'll be comfortable managing budgets, weighing up complex risks and issues, and replanning to keep things moving when the unexpected happens.
Just as important is how you bring people with you. This project involves a wide range of stakeholders across ICT, Estates, Security and beyond, each with their own priorities. We're looking for someone who can pull those requirements together into a shared plan, build strong relationships, and push back with confidence when needed. You'll be highly organised and a natural communicator across disciplines, whether on the phone, in meetings, over email or in writing. You'll keep the right people informed at the right time, and you'll produce clear reporting at every level, from day-to-day project updates through to papers for senior governance boards.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
