Summary
Do you enjoy delivering ICT projects, from infrastructure to software, and want to see your work come to life in brand-new museum galleries?
About us
The Science Museum Group is the world's leading group of science museums, and our mission is to inspire futures. Across our museums in London, Manchester, York, Bradford and Shildon, we welcome millions of visitors every year and care for a collection of more than 7 million objects that tell the story of human ingenuity. The Science and Industry Museum sits in the heart of Manchester's Castlefield, on the site of the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station, in the city where the modern industrial world began.
We're now partway through an ambitious long-term Masterplan to transform the museum: restoring its historic buildings, creating new galleries and spaces, and changing how we share Manchester's story of science, innovation and industry with future generations. Joining us now means playing a real part in shaping what the museum becomes.
About the role
We are looking for an ICT Project Manager to deliver ICT workstreams for Masterplan and Capital Projects, alongside strategic ICT projects, using best-practice project management methodology. Working with stakeholders, you will agree requirements and scope for specific projects and lead delivery from initiation through to transition into business as usual.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to new galleries being delivered at the Science & Industry Museum. Although the role is based in Manchester, occasional travel to other museums within the Science Museum Group will be required.
You will maintain project momentum to ensure delivery on time, within scope and within budget. You will also ensure that any changes are managed through clear and robust governance structures.
Working with the wider ICT PMO, you will manage stakeholders across the ICT team and the wider organisation through regular formal and informal communication. You will use your experience to support and lead technical project teams in a hybrid working environment, helping to maintain productivity and meet key targets.
This is a full-time, fixed-term role until 31 October 2028, with a salary of £49,379 per annum. You'll be based at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester. The role offers hybrid working, with two days a week on site and three working from home. You'll also need to travel occasionally to our other museums across the Science Museum Group.
About you
We're keen to see applications from candidates who have delivered ICT projects from start to finish and are comfortable working across the whole range of technology work. That might include infrastructure, networks, hardware, systems and software. You'll be working on the ICT side of our Masterplan and Capital Projects, helping to deliver new galleries at the Science and Industry Museum through to October 2028, alongside wider strategic ICT projects. We'd love to hear from you if you've used Agile, PRINCE2 or similar methods to keep projects on track, managed budgets and risks, and replanned when things didn't go to schedule, all without losing momentum.
Just as important is how you work with people. You'll be working with a wide mix of colleagues, from ICT specialists and product owners to gallery teams, external suppliers and project boards. So, we're looking for someone who communicates clearly, builds good relationships and can keep stakeholders informed with straightforward, regular reporting. If you're earlier in your project management career and don't tick every box, please still apply. We're open to developing the right person, and we care as much about your approach, your curiosity and your willingness to learn as we do about years of experience.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
