Luma Education Recruitment is recruiting for an experienced Functional Skills Tutor – English to join a supportive and welcoming specialist SEND school in Silverstone, Northamptonshire.

Set within a beautiful rural location, this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Functional Skills Tutor, English Tutor, HLTA, Cover Supervisor or Teaching Assistant who is confident supporting young people with English and Functional Skills.

The role would suit someone looking for a long-term position within a small specialist school, where staff work closely together and pupils benefit from a high level of individual support.

The position is initially offered as maternity cover, with potential for a temp-to-perm opportunity following the maternity contract, subject to suitability and the school's requirements.

The Role

As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will deliver engaging English and Functional Skills learning to pupils with SEND, working closely with experienced teachers and support staff.

You will support pupils to develop their literacy, communication and functional English skills, adapting learning to individual abilities, needs and EHCP outcomes.

Your responsibilities will include:

Planning and delivering Functional Skills English sessions

Supporting pupils working towards Functional Skills qualifications

Delivering English learning to individuals and small groups

Supporting reading, writing, spelling, grammar and communication

Adapting lessons and resources to meet individual SEND needs

Supporting pupils working at different levels and abilities

Preparing pupils for Functional Skills assessments where appropriate

Monitoring pupil progress and providing feedback

Supporting EHCP outcomes and individual learning targets

Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils

Encouraging confidence, independence and engagement

Supporting positive behaviour and maintaining a calm learning environment

Working closely with teachers and support staff

Taking responsibility for learning sessions and activities as required

About You

The school is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Functional Skills Tutor with a strong English background.

You may currently be working as a:

Functional Skills Tutor

English Tutor

English Teacher

Cover Supervisor

Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Experienced Teaching Assistant

Learning Support Assistant

Further Education or adult education tutor

You will ideally have:

Strong English and literacy subject knowledge

Experience delivering Functional Skills English

Experience supporting children or young people

Confidence delivering learning to individuals and small groups

Experience working with SEND / SEN / SEMH pupils is highly desirable

A calm, patient and nurturing approach

Strong communication and classroom management skills

The ability to adapt learning for different abilities and needs

Experience supporting pupils towards qualifications is desirable

A genuine interest in supporting pupils' academic and personal development

Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
