Start date: ASAP

Expected end date: End of the academic year

A supportive and inclusive SEND high school in Sale, Trafford is looking for a confident and enthusiastic Cover Supervisor to join their team on a full-time, long-term basis, starting as soon as possible and continuing until the end of the academic year.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and is confident managing a classroom while supporting secondary-aged pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The successful candidate will supervise classes during teacher absence, delivering pre-planned work and ensuring pupils remain engaged, supported and focused throughout lessons.

About the Role

As a Cover Supervisor, you will take responsibility for classes when the usual teacher is absent, ensuring that pupils complete the work that has been set and that a positive, structured and supportive learning environment is maintained.

As this is a specialist SEND setting, you will work with pupils who may have a range of additional needs, including autism, ADHD, communication difficulties, learning needs and social and emotional needs.

You will be supported by teaching assistants and other specialist staff within the classroom, but you must be confident taking the lead, communicating clear expectations and responding calmly and consistently to challenging situations.

The school is looking for someone who is confident, resilient, adaptable and approachable, with the ability to build positive relationships with young people while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Key Responsibilities

- Supervise classes during periods of teacher absence.

- Deliver pre-planned lessons and activities across a range of subjects.

- Provide clear instructions and ensure pupils understand the work that has been set.

- Maintain a calm, structured and positive classroom environment.

- Encourage pupils to engage with learning and complete assigned tasks.

- Adapt your communication and approach to meet individual SEND needs.

- Work alongside Teaching Assistants and specialist support staff within the classroom.

- Use positive and consistent behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.

- Support pupils with emotional regulation and engagement where required.

- Manage classroom routines, transitions and expectations effectively.

- Provide feedback to teaching staff regarding pupil engagement, behaviour and completed work.

- Follow individual pupil support plans and school procedures.

- Follow the school's safeguarding, behaviour and SEND policies at all times.

The Ideal Candidate

- Has previous experience working with children or young people, ideally within secondary education, SEND, alternative provision or a similar environment.

- Is confident leading and managing a classroom.

- Can communicate instructions clearly and maintain appropriate expectations.

- Is calm, resilient and confident when responding to challenging behaviour.

- Understands that behaviour can be a form of communication.

- Can adapt their approach to support pupils with different additional needs.

- Is comfortable working across a variety of curriculum subjects.

- Has strong communication, organisation and teamwork skills.

- Can build positive relationships with young people while maintaining professional boundaries.

- Is reliable, proactive and committed to supporting positive outcomes for pupils.

- Has the right to work in the UK.

Desirable, but Not Essential

- Previous experience as a Cover Supervisor, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Behaviour Mentor.

- Experience working within a SEND school, secondary school or alternative provision.

- Experience supporting pupils with autism, ADHD, communication difficulties, learning difficulties or social and emotional needs.

- Experience managing groups or classes of secondary-aged pupils.

- A relevant education, Teaching Assistant, psychology, sports coaching or youth work qualification.

- Training in areas such as Team Teach, autism awareness, behaviour support or de-escalation.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Cover Supervisor looking for a rewarding long-term position within a specialist SEND high school in Sale, where you can play an important role in maintaining continuity of learning and helping young people develop their confidence, independence and engagement with education.
