A welcoming and inclusive primary school in Old Trafford, Manchester is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to join their team on a full-time, long-term basis, starting as soon as possible and continuing until the end of the academic year.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and wants to make a positive difference to pupils' learning, confidence and development.
The successful candidate will work closely with class teachers, the SENCO and wider support team to provide targeted support to pupils with additional needs, helping them access learning, develop their independence and participate fully in school life.
About the Role
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with additional needs, helping them engage successfully with classroom learning and overcome barriers that may affect their education.
Depending on individual pupil needs, you may support children with autism, ADHD, speech and language difficulties, social and emotional needs and other additional learning needs.
The school is looking for someone who is patient, nurturing and adaptable, with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils while maintaining clear and consistent expectations.
You will play an important role in supporting pupils both academically and emotionally, helping them develop their communication, confidence, independence and emotional regulation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEND.
- Support pupils to access classroom learning and engage successfully with activities.
- Adapt resources and approaches to meet individual learning needs.
- Work closely with class teachers and the SENCO to implement individual support strategies.
- Support pupils with communication, social interaction and emotional regulation.
- Promote pupils' independence, confidence and engagement with learning.
- Use positive and consistent behaviour management strategies.
- Recognise potential triggers and respond calmly to behaviours that challenge.
- Deliver targeted interventions and additional learning support where required.
- Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to teaching staff.
- Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes and other areas of the school day.
- Help create a safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
- Follow the school's safeguarding, behaviour and SEND policies at all times.
The Ideal Candidate
- Has previous experience working with children or young people, ideally within a primary school or SEND setting.
- Has experience supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities.
- Is patient, caring and able to build positive relationships with pupils.
- Understands that behaviour can be a form of communication and can respond calmly and consistently.
- Is confident supporting pupils both academically and emotionally.
- Can adapt their communication and support style to meet individual children's needs.
- Has strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Is reliable, proactive and committed to supporting pupil progress.
- Is willing to undertake relevant SEND and safeguarding training.
- Has the right to work in the UK.
Desirable, but Not Essential
- Previous experience as an SEN Teaching Assistant, Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant.
- Experience supporting pupils with autism, ADHD, speech and language needs or social and emotional needs.
- A relevant Teaching Assistant, childcare, education or psychology qualification.
- Experience delivering targeted interventions or working from individual support plans.
- Experience supporting pupils with EHCPs.
- Training in areas such as autism awareness, behaviour support, Team Teach, Makaton or PECS.
