Summary
We are working with a welcoming and ambitious special school in Newham, supporting pupils with autism, many of whom are non-verbal, and pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). Every pupil communicates and learns in their own way, and our role is to notice, value and build on each moment of progress.
The schools calm, skilled and caring staff team works closely with families and therapists to give pupils a rich, sensory and highly personalised education.
The role
We are looking for a committed and compassionate teacher to join their team.
You will:
- Plan and deliver personalised, communication-focused and sensory learning matched to each pupil's EHCP outcomes
- Use approaches such as Intensive Interaction, PECS, Makaton, objects of reference, AAC and structured teaching
- Support pupils at all stages, from early sensory exploration to emerging independence, using the Engagement Model where appropriate
- Lead and develop a team of teaching assistants
- Work alongside speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other professionals to embed programmes into daily classroom life
- Support pupils' personal care, moving and handling, and health needs with dignity and respect
- Build positive relationships with parents and carers and contribute to EHCP reviews
About you
You will:
- Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Have experience of teaching pupils with autism and/or complex needs, or show real potential and commitment to this field (ECTs and teachers new to SEN are welcome to apply)
- Understand how to communicate with and assess pupils who are non-verbal or have PMLD
- Be creative, patient, resilient and calm
- Be a strong team player who combines kindness with high expectations
- Be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
