We are seeking aLocum Consultant in Plastic Surgery specialising in Skin Cancerto join our supportive and innovative Plastic Surgery team. The successful candidate will provide general plastic surgery services with a particular focus on skin cancer management, working closely with multidisciplinary colleagues across Oxford and Reading.

This post will support the expansion of consultant capacity and elective surgical services within the newSurgical Elective Centre (SEC)at the John Radcliffe Hospital, opening in Summer 2026. The SEC will provide state-of-the-art facilities, increasing surgical capacity and enhancing patient care across Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire.

The successful candidate will provide consultant-led general plastic surgery services, with a particular focus on skin cancer, across both theJohn Radcliffe Hospital, Oxfordand theRoyal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. The post-holder will join an established team of ten Plastic Surgeons and contribute to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care.

Key responsibilities will include participation in the Plastic Surgery on-call rota (currently 1:14), supporting elective and emergency services, and working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. The post-holder must be willing to work flexibly across the Trust’s sites and partner hospitals to meet service needs.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

The post-holders’ duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations and its partner hospitals. Flexible working is essential.

Clinical Duties

The post-holder will have responsibility for general plastic surgery services at the John Radcliffe Hospital, alongside participation in the on-call rota (currently 1 in 14) and will complement an established team of ten Plastic Surgeons with responsibility for skin oncology.

The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery provides a comprehensive reconstructive service to Oxford and the surrounding region. The service is consultant-led. Current consultant delivered services include trauma and reconstructive surgery, craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate, upper limb surgery, bone infection, sarcoma, breast reconstruction, skin cancer, autologous tissue transplantation, head and neck cancer reconstruction, and hypospadias. The department currently holds Burn Facility status within the London and South-East Burn Network. We are fortunate to have co-located facilities within a modern building on the John Radcliffe Hospital site, including offices, outpatient clinics, theatres, adult and paediatric wards, and day case units. The Head and Neck Unit is based within the Cancer Centre at the nearby Churchill Hospital. The department also has a significant presence at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC), where the plastic surgery team contributes to hand surgery, and provides reconstructive support to both the Bone Infection Unit and Sarcoma services.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, including the teaching of medical students, training of junior doctors, and participation in clinical examinations. These responsibilities form an integral part of routine clinical activity.

The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training, and research will be reflected in regular job plan reviews. The department has strong links with the University of Oxford and is actively engaged in research, offering opportunities for academic involvement.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills within their area of practice and be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.

Professional and study leave will be granted in accordance with the Trust’s Terms and Conditions of Service, supporting appropriate study, postgraduate training, continuing medical education (CME) courses, and other relevant professional development activities.

The Trust fully supports continuing professional development (CPD) as required by the General Medical Council (GMC) and the relevant surgical colleges, and is committed to providing both time and financial support for these activities. Appropriate arrangements are in place to ensure that all consultants undergo an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser, and the Trust supports all clinicians through the revalidation process. In addition, the appointee will be offered mentorship from an experienced consultant colleague to support their integration into the department and facilitate a smooth transition into the role.

Management

The post-holder will be expected to work within the Trust’s management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal. It is recognised that the Trust operates within finite resources, and any proposed changes in clinical practice, workload, or service developments requiring additional

resources must be agreed in advance.

The post-holder will undertake the administrative responsibilities associated with the care of their patients and the delivery of their clinical service, under the direction of the Lead Clinician and/or Directorate Chair.

Appropriate clinical, administrative, and secretarial support will be provided to the appointee.

Risk Management

The management of risk is a responsibility shared by all staff and will be undertaken within a progressive, open, and transparent environment. Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training, and support to fulfil this responsibility.

All staff are expected to be familiar with the Trust’s Major Incident Policy and Fire Policy, and to understand the ‘local response plan’, including their specific role within it.

Responsibilities for Health & Safety

The post-holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, relevant statutory regulations, and Trust policies and procedures. This will be supported through the provision of appropriate training and specialist advice where required.

Infection Control

Infection prevention and control is the responsibility of all staff. All employees, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the Trust’s Infection Prevention and Control policies and to maintain

high standards of practice at all times, thereby reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections.

All staff employed by the Trust have the following key responsibilities:

• Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient contact or contact with the

patient’s surroundings.

• Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by

the Trust.

• Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be

transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
