Summary
SEMH Primary Teacher
Dukinfield, Tameside
£42,000+ per annum | Negotiable Depending on Experience
That's where good SEMH teaching starts.
A pupil may have the ability to complete the work in front of them, but anxiety, dysregulation, previous experiences of education or difficulties managing relationships can make accessing that learning incredibly difficult.
This role is about understanding what's getting in the way - and finding another route in.
We're recruiting a Primary Teacher in Dukinfield to teach children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and SEND.
You'll still plan lessons, teach the curriculum, assess progress and maintain high expectations.
The difference is in how you get there.
A carefully planned lesson might need changing because a pupil arrives dysregulated. A child who refuses a written task might demonstrate the same knowledge another way. Progress could mean completing a piece of maths - or remaining in the classroom long enough to attempt it.
You'll need the confidence to adapt without losing sight of the learning.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and delivering differentiated primary lessons
- Adapting teaching around individual SEND and SEMH needs
- Identifying barriers to learning and developing practical strategies to overcome them
- Establishing clear, predictable classroom routines
- Supporting emotional regulation alongside academic development
- Using assessment to identify gaps and plan appropriate next steps
- Contributing to individual learning and support plans
- Working closely with Teaching Assistants, SEND colleagues and therapists
- Maintaining appropriate expectations around behaviour and learning
- Building constructive relationships with families and wider professionals
You won't necessarily win every pupil over in the first week.
Some children may have experienced disrupted education or developed negative associations with school and adults in authority.
Trust can take time.
We're therefore looking for a teacher who can be consistent without being rigid, patient without lowering expectations and curious about what's driving a behaviour rather than simply reacting to it.
You'll need:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
- Strong primary curriculum knowledge
- Experience supporting pupils with SEMH and/or SEND
- Confident behaviour and classroom management
- The ability to differentiate and adapt learning effectively
- An understanding of SEND practice and relevant statutory guidance
- Strong communication and multidisciplinary working skills
Experience in specialist education would be valuable, although we'd also be interested in hearing from strong mainstream primary teachers with significant SEND or SEMH experience who are ready to move into a more specialist environment.
The salary starts from £42,000 per annum and is negotiable depending on experience.
You'll also have access to:
- A generous pension scheme
- Professional development opportunities
- Career progression
- Wellbeing and mental health resources
- Support from a multidisciplinary team
This isn't about lowering the bar for children with SEMH or SEND.
It's about recognising that the route to reaching it won't always be the same.
If that's the kind of teaching you believe in, we'd like to hear from you.
