Pastoral Support Mentor
Greater Manchester
£14-£16 per hour | £105-£120 per day
Flexible | Part-Time | Full-Time | Short & Long-Term
The pupil who refuses to enter a lesson.
The teenager who's suddenly stopped attending.
The young person who reacts aggressively when they're challenged.
It's easy to focus on the behaviour you can see. Effective pastoral support asks a different question:
What's happening underneath it?
Elevate Beyond is recruiting Pastoral Support Mentors to work with young people aged 11-19 across schools, alternative provision and specialist education settings throughout Greater Manchester.
The young people you'll support may be experiencing SEMH needs, anxiety, trauma, school avoidance, emotional regulation difficulties or challenging circumstances outside education.
Your role isn't to excuse inappropriate behaviour.
It's to help young people understand it, develop alternative ways of responding and remove some of the barriers preventing them from engaging successfully with education.
That could mean supporting a pupil after an incident and helping them return to class.
It might mean weeks of mentoring around attendance.
Or you could be helping a teenager who's disengaged from education start thinking about employment, training or what comes next.
Your work may include:
- Delivering one-to-one mentoring
- Providing pastoral and emotional support
- Identifying triggers and patterns in behaviour
- Helping young people develop regulation and coping strategies
- Supporting pupils affected by trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences
- Re-engaging pupils with poor attendance or school avoidance
- Supporting behaviour without creating confrontation
- Helping young people develop resilience and independence
- Encouraging positive choices around education and future pathways
- Working alongside safeguarding, SEND, teaching and pastoral colleagues
Young people don't need another adult who agrees with everything they say.
And they don't need someone who assumes every difficult behaviour requires punishment.
Good pastoral work sits somewhere in between.
You'll need to build trust while maintaining boundaries, listen without making promises you can't keep and know when encouragement needs to become appropriate challenge.
That's why we're interested in experience rather than one particular career route.
Your background could be in:
Pastoral Support | Youth Work | Learning Mentoring | SEMH | Alternative Provision | Family Support | Residential Care | Safeguarding | Social Care | Community Services
If you've successfully supported teenagers through difficult circumstances, we'd like to hear from you.
- Relevant experience working with young people
- An Enhanced DBS including the Children's Barred List
- Registration with the DBS Update Service
- A Level 2 Safeguarding certificate
- Two professional references
- The right to work in the UK
Elevate Beyond has opportunities across:
Bolton | Bury | Manchester | Oldham | Rochdale | Salford | Stockport | Tameside | Trafford | Wigan
Work ranges from single-day cover and part-time assignments to full-time, long-term placements, with pay of £14-£16 per hour / £105-£120 per day.
That means you can explore different settings, build specialist experience or find a longer-term placement that suits where you want your career to go.
A young person doesn't suddenly transform because of one conversation.
Progress might be arriving at school three days this week instead of two.
Going back into a lesson after an incident.
Recognising a trigger before reacting.
Asking for help rather than walking out.
Those changes can look small from the outside.
When you know the young person, they're anything but.
If that's the kind of progress you understand and want to support, apply directly through this advert for Pastoral Support Mentor opportunities across Greater Manchester.
