Summary
This is a 12 month fixed-term post for a Locum Consultant Hepatologist. The role will comprise a mixture of outpatient clinical work, endoscopy and in-patient care, with supporting professional activity time. The successful candidate will join a team of 16 consultants in Gastroenterology and Hepatology with a wide range of specialist interests including advanced endoscopy, IBD, clinical nutrition, hepatology, ERCP/EUS and upper GI therapeutics. They are supported by a team of 7 registrars, 3 clinical fellows in endoscopy and several clinical nurse specialist teams, including 5 Hepatology Clinical Nurse Specialists. Provision of ERCP and / or EUS is not a requirement for this post, but it may be possible for this to be included for those with a Hepatobiliary sub-specialty interest. This post will include a commitment to in-patient care of Hepatology specialty patients (currently in 3 week blocks; typically 25-30 in-patients). There is no direct post take of cases unless the patient has been admitted directly to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology ward. This post may include a commitment to the out-of-hours rota (currently 1:9), which delivers a 7-day emergency out-of-hours endoscopy/gastroenterology service, including weekend / bank holiday review of selected in-patients. The successful candidate will work within the Portsmouth hepatology service, which since 2010 has grown rapidly to become one of the largest in Southern England. There are established links for liver transplantation with the Royal Free Hospital, including a joint 2-monthly satellite clinic at Queen Alexandra Hospital. There are comprehensive diagnostic and interventional GI radiology services, including provision of TIPSS and locoregional therapy for HCC. An excellent specialist nursing team provide treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, management of stable cirrhosis and virtual management and monitoring of haemochromatosis and autoimmune liver disease. We are a core member of the Wessex Hepatology ODN, providing treatment of Hepatitis C and second-line therapies for PBC. Our services for alcohol-use disorders, MASLD/MASH and HCV have received national recognition and we have a thriving clinical trials programme supported by a hepatology research fellow. This is an excellent opportunity to join an enthusiastic, innovative and expanding unit. A business case is currently in development for a substantive Consultant Hepatologist post. Development of sub-specialty interests is encouraged. The trust has a commitment to equality and diversity and applications are welcomed from those wishing to work less than full-time.
