Summary

The South West & South Central (SWSC) Area Psychology Team delivers psychological services across 14 prisons, offering a unique opportunity to develop a broad and varied portfolio of practice. Our establishments differ in function and population, meaning no two roles are exactly the same. This diversity provides psychologists with rich professional experiences and opportunities to apply their skills across a range of clinical, forensic and operational settings.

A significant part of our work involves supporting the parole process, including the delivery of high-quality psychological risk assessments and other Parole Board-directed activity. Alongside this, we deliver a range of specialist one-to-one interventions, including the Healthy Sex Programme, helping individuals address factors linked to their offending and support their progression through sentence plans.

Our psychologists play a key role in supporting prisons to meet wider operational objectives. This includes providing psychologically informed consultation, contributing to staff training and development, supporting research and evaluation activity, and helping establishments progress important safety and rehabilitation agendas.

As a Band 7 Registered Psychologist, you will be an integral member of a local prison-based psychology team, working under the guidance of both an Establishment Lead Psychologist and a Cluster Lead Psychologist. You will also contribute to the wider SWSC Area Psychology Team and Psychology Services Group (PSG) priorities. The role includes designated supervision responsibilities for Trainee Psychologists, providing an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of the future psychology workforce.

Our establishments are located across the South West and South Central regions, encompassing some of the UK's most desirable places to live, with access to coastlines, countryside, vibrant cities and thriving local communities. Whether you are looking to further develop specialist forensic psychology skills, broaden your experience across different prison functions, or take the next step in your professional career, SWSC Area Psychology offers a supportive, ambitious and rewarding environment in which to thrive.
