For a child with additional needs, a successful day at school can look very different.
It might be joining a lesson they usually find overwhelming.
Communicating what they need instead of becoming frustrated.
Managing a difficult transition.
Completing a piece of work independently.
Or simply feeling safe, understood and ready to learn.
A welcoming and inclusive school in Liverpool is looking for a Special Needs Teaching Assistant to join its team as soon as possible.
This is a full-time opportunity to work closely with children who need additional support to access learning, develop independence and feel confident within their school environment.
You'll support pupils with a range of special educational needs and disabilities, which may include:
Autism (ASC) • ADHD • Learning Difficulties • SEMH • Speech & Language Needs • Sensory Needs • Physical Disabilities • Communication Needs
No two pupils will need exactly the same approach.
One child may need learning broken into smaller, more manageable steps.
Another may need visual communication or additional processing time.
Some pupils may need support regulating their emotions or managing sensory overload, while others may require practical assistance to participate fully in school life.
Your role is to understand what works for the individual child and help create the conditions in which they can succeed.
Depending on the pupils you're supporting, your day could include:
- Providing one-to-one and small-group SEND support.
- Helping pupils access classroom learning and activities.
- Adapting resources around individual learning and communication needs.
- Supporting targets identified within EHCPs and individual support plans.
- Delivering structured interventions under the guidance of teaching staff.
- Supporting communication and social interaction.
- Helping pupils develop emotional-regulation strategies.
- Encouraging positive behaviour and engagement.
- Supporting transitions between activities and environments.
- Building confidence and encouraging greater independence.
- Providing mobility or personal-care support where required by an individual pupil.
- Observing progress and sharing useful feedback with teachers.
- Working alongside the SENCO, teachers, therapists and other professionals.
- Maintaining accurate records relating to pupil support and progress.
Great SEND support isn't about doing everything for a child.
It's about helping them reach the point where they can do more for themselves.
You'll need to recognise when to step in and when to step back.
That could mean gradually reducing prompts during an activity, encouraging a pupil to communicate independently or helping them develop strategies they can eventually use without adult intervention.
Those small changes can become significant milestones.
You may already be working as a:
SEND Teaching Assistant • SEN TA • Learning Support Assistant • 1:1 Teaching Assistant • Behaviour Mentor • Care or Support Worker
Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND would be particularly valuable.
We're looking for someone who:
- Is patient, calm and consistent.
- Takes time to understand individual pupils.
- Can adapt their approach rather than expecting every child to respond in the same way.
- Builds positive relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Communicates confidently with teachers and other professionals.
- Understands the importance of safeguarding.
- Can remain composed when a pupil is struggling or dysregulated.
- Is comfortable following individual support strategies and plans.
- Wants to continue developing their SEND knowledge and practical skills.
Experience with autism, ADHD, SEMH, communication needs, complex learning difficulties or physical disabilities would be particularly relevant.
An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one, will be required.
