A pupil refuses to enter the classroom.
Another becomes overwhelmed when the timetable changes.
A child who understands far more than they can express becomes frustrated when they can't communicate what they need.
What looks like challenging behaviour from the outside can often be a young person trying to tell us something.
A supportive education setting in Sefton is looking for a SEND Learning Support Assistant to join its team as soon as possible.
You'll work closely with children and young people with additional needs, helping them access education in a way that recognises how they learn, communicate and experience the world around them.
The pupils you support may have needs including:
Autism (ASC) • ADHD • SEMH • Speech, Language & Communication Needs • Learning Difficulties • Sensory Needs • Emotional Regulation Difficulties
Some pupils may communicate verbally but struggle to explain how they're feeling.
Others may use visual communication, gestures or alternative communication methods.
Some may find busy classrooms, unexpected changes or particular sensory experiences overwhelming.
Your role is to get to know the individual pupil and begin recognising the approaches that help them feel secure, participate and make progress.
No two pupils - and often no two days - will be exactly the same.
You could be helping one child settle into their morning routine, supporting another during a structured intervention and helping a pupil regulate following a difficult transition later in the day.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Providing targeted one-to-one SEND support.
- Supporting pupils within small-group learning activities.
- Helping children access classroom learning.
- Breaking activities into smaller, achievable steps.
- Adapting resources around individual learning and communication needs.
- Supporting pupils working towards EHCP and individual targets.
- Using visual schedules, communication aids and structured routines where appropriate.
- Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
- Helping pupils manage transitions throughout the school day.
- Encouraging communication and social interaction.
- Developing confidence and independence.
- Delivering interventions under the guidance of teaching staff.
- Observing progress and sharing useful information with teachers.
- Working collaboratively with the SENCO and wider support team.
Working in SEND requires patience.
There will be days when a pupil makes obvious progress.
There will also be days when something that worked yesterday doesn't work today.
That's why consistency matters.
You'll need to remain calm when a pupil is struggling, adapt your approach when necessary and avoid taking behaviour personally.
Building trust takes time.
Once it's there, you can become an important part of helping a young person feel more confident within education.
You don't necessarily need to have spent your entire career in a school.
Relevant experience could come from:
Education • SEND • Youth Work • Residential Care • Children's Support • Behaviour Support • Mentoring • Coaching • Early Years
You may already be working as a Teaching Assistant, SEN TA, Learning Support Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, 1:1 Support Worker or Care Assistant.

- Have experience working with children or young people.
- Are patient, dependable and emotionally resilient.
- Can build positive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Understand that behaviour can be a form of communication.
- Are willing to adapt their approach around individual needs.
- Can follow agreed support and behaviour strategies consistently.
- Communicate effectively with teachers and other professionals.
- Want to develop their understanding of SEND.
- Are comfortable working both independently and as part of a wider team.
An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one, will be required.
SEND support can also become the foundation for a longer-term career.
