Summary

Speech and Language Teaching Assistant - Tower Hamlets

About us!

Refine Education was built by people understand your side of the table - we know what a good agency relationship should feel like, and what it too often doesn't.

We're chasing the right fit, for you and for the schools we work with, with real transparency about pay, placements, and process from the first conversation.

The Role!

What is a Speech and Language Teaching Assistant?

A Speech and Language Teaching Assistant supports pupils with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), working closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and where relevant, the school's Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT). The role involves delivering pre-planned speech and language intervention programmes, running small group or 1:1 sessions, and reinforcing communication strategies throughout the school day to help pupils express themselves confidently and access the wider curriculum.

What experience are we looking for?

• We're looking for a candidate with proven, hands-on experience supporting pupils with speech, language and communication needs - ideally gained in a school, nursery, or specialist setting. You should be comfortable delivering structured intervention programmes with minimal supervision and confident liaising directly with SENCOs, class teachers, and Speech and Language Therapists on pupil progress. This role suits someone who already understands SLCN strategies in practice, rather than someone new to the area looking to build initial experience.

Why work as a Speech and Language Teaching Assistant?

Gain Specialist Experience in Education

• Specialist SLCN Skills: You'll build on your existing expertise by delivering structured speech and language interventions and working alongside qualified Speech and Language Therapists - experience that's highly valued across SEND, SLT, and educational psychology career paths.

• In-Demand Expertise: You'll deepen your expertise in supporting pupils with a range of communication needs, from developmental language disorder to selective mutism and social communication difficulties.

Opportunity for Career Progression

• With further experience, Speech and Language Teaching Assistants often progress into HLTA positions, SENCO support, specialist school posts, or go on to pursue further training or study towards becoming a qualified Speech and Language Therapist.

Experience, Training and Qualifications required for the Speech and Language Teaching Assistant position:

• Demonstrable previous experience supporting children or young people with speech, language and communication needs is essential.

• Familiarity with recognised strategies and programmes (Makaton, PECS, Elklan, Talk Boost, Colourful Semantics) is expected; formal training or certification in one or more of these is a strong advantage.

• Experience working to a structured intervention plan or liaising with a Speech and Language Therapist is highly desirable.

• A calm, patient, and encouraging approach to supporting pupils' communication and confidence.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently once briefed on a pupil's plan.

To be eligible for the Speech and Language Teaching Assistant position through Refine Education you must:

• Hold Right to Work in the UK

• Hold an enhanced child barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to process a new application

• Provide two professional references, ideally evidencing your SLCN experience

• Experience working within an EHCP framework or alongside a Speech and Language Therapist is expected for this role

If this sounds like the kind of agency relationship you've been looking for and and ready to make a real difference in young learners' lives, apply today as we'd love to hear from you.
