Speech & Language Teaching Assistant - Bethnal Green
Location: Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets
Contract: Full-Time
Help a Child Find the Confidence to Communicate
Imagine knowing what you want to say but struggling to find the words.
Finding it difficult to follow instructions that other pupils seem to understand immediately.
Or wanting to join a conversation but not knowing how.
For children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), those difficulties can affect far more than communication. They can influence learning, friendships, confidence and a child's entire experience of school.
Refine Education is looking for an experienced Speech and Language Teaching Assistant to support pupils within a school in Bethnal Green.
This is a specialist role for someone who already has practical SLCN experience and wants to build on it.
Turn Communication Strategies Into Everyday Progress
You'll work closely with class teachers, the SENCO and, where appropriate, a Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT) to ensure communication support isn't limited to an intervention session.
You'll help pupils use those skills throughout their school day.
Your role will include:
- Delivering structured 1:1 and small-group speech and language interventions.
- Following programmes developed by teachers, SENCOs and Speech and Language Therapists.
- Supporting pupils with receptive and expressive language.
- Developing vocabulary, understanding and social communication.
- Reinforcing communication strategies within classroom learning.
- Helping pupils communicate their needs with greater confidence.
- Monitoring progress and sharing observations with the wider team.
- Supporting individual EHCP outcomes relating to communication.
- Adapting your approach around individual SLCN profiles.
Pupils may have needs including Developmental Language Disorder, social communication difficulties, selective mutism or communication needs associated with SEND and autism.
Bring Your SLCN Experience
This isn't an entry-level SEND position.
We're particularly interested in candidates who already have hands-on experience supporting children or young people with speech, language and communication needs within a school, nursery or specialist setting.
Experience using approaches such as:
Makaton • PECS • Elklan • Talk Boost • Colourful Semantics
would be particularly valuable.
You'll also ideally have experience delivering structured interventions, working within an EHCP framework or liaising with a Speech and Language Therapist.
You'll need to be patient, observant and encouraging, with the confidence to work independently once you've been briefed on a pupil's programme.
Build on Your Specialist Experience
Speech and language support can provide valuable foundations for progression into specialist SEND, HLTA work, SENCO support, educational psychology or Speech and Language Therapy.
This role gives you the opportunity to deepen your existing SLCN knowledge while seeing the difference consistent communication support can make to a child's everyday life.
