Stockton-on-Tees Area

Hours: 24-hour shifts (8am to 8am), occasionally split into 12-hour shifts. Multiple positions available, including core team members and relief staff to cover annual leave and sickness.

Rate of Pay: To be discussed with successful applicants - £15 per hour/£15.50 for senior positions.

About the Role

We are looking to recruit a team of caring and reliable Personal Assistants to support a gentleman with Down's syndrome to live an active and fulfilling life. We are aiming to build a core team of approximately five Personal Assistants, alongside additional staff who can provide flexible cover when required.

This is a rewarding opportunity to support someone who enjoys getting out and about, participating in activities and spending time in the community. The role requires a person-centred approach, good communication skills and the ability to work consistently as part of a wider support team.

About the Individual

The gentleman enjoys a wide range of activities and interests, including:

  • Playing pool
  • Going bowling
  • Swimming
  • Colouring and creative activities
  • Playing on his Wii
  • Trips to the seaside
  • Going for drives in the car
He enjoys having a laugh and good banter with the people supporting him. He likes to be given time to speak and values people who listen patiently and actively. He does not like the smell of cigarette smoke.

He can experience periods of low mood and has possible dementia, therefore he requires support from individuals who are understanding, patient and able to provide reassurance and consistency.

Duties Will Include

  • Providing person-centred support at home and in the community
  • Supporting access to social, leisure and recreational activities
  • Promoting independence, choice and wellbeing
  • Working collaboratively with other members of the support team
  • Completing effective handovers and maintaining clear communication
  • Supporting daily routines and helping to overcome barriers and challenges
  • Building a positive and trusting relationship
The Successful Applicant Will:

  • Have experience supporting people with learning disabilities
  • Have experience supporting individuals who experience low mood
  • Ideally have experience of supporting people with Down's syndrome
  • Have experience of supporting behaviours that may challenge
  • Be able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Be patient, empathetic and understanding
  • Have good communication and active listening skills
  • Be flexible and able to adapt their approach to meet individual needs
  • Be confident using initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Enjoy supporting people to access the community and participate in activities
  • Have a good sense of humour and enjoy building positive relationships
Essential Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS check required (to be arranged if necessary)
  • Full driving licence preferred due to the activities and outings involved in the role
