Summary

Rhinology Fellow

Speciality: Ear nose and Throat

Fixed term for 12 months

The main ENT Department is located in the West Wing at The John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. It provides emergency care and wide range of general and sub-specialty elective inpatient work for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire regions. Day surgery cases are treated in the West Wing, Churchill head and neck unit, The Horton, Stoke Mandeville Hospital and High Wycombe.

 The department prides itself on being a regional tertiary referral Centre for head and neck oncology, skull base surgery and neurology, pediatrics ENT, specialist rhinology and otology including cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids.  It is the hub of the Regional SpR Training Program. It is an extremely well supported department with ample opportunity for learning and development and successful applicants will join a well-respected and recognized department and team. 

You will be expected to attend daily ward rounds, undertake ward work and participate in holding the on-call bleep.  You will have the opportunity to sit in outpatient clinics and attend theatre to improve and develop knowledge and understanding.  You will be expected to attend and contribute to monthly academic sessions, MDT and clinical governance. The specialist registrars are heavily involved in the management of the junior clinical staff and aim to support on-call duties and clinician development very closely. 

The work of the Department is supported by a full range of support services including audiology, speech & language therapy, an aural care team, pre-clerking nurses, head & neck cancer nursing team, dieticians, pediatrics tracheotomy nurse specialists etc.

Your role will involve the following:

•       Inpatient care

o  Providing medical management for all ENT patients at the John Radcliffe hospital

•       Emergency ENT service

o  Including 1 in 8 on-call covering the ENT SHO bleep, managing referrals internally (from A&E and other wards) and externally (from primary care and referring hospitals)

o  Assessing and managing patients on the GP Referral Unit (acute ENT referrals)

•       Outpatient care

o  Nasal fracture clinic

o  General ENT clinics 2 per week

o  Specialist rhinology clinic 1 per week (One stop Sinusitis / Transcranial Trauma/Combined Airway Clinic

•       Theatres

o  2 all day lists per week in rhinology with the opportunity to attend joint cases at other times with ophthalmology/plastics/neurosurgery. These will be shared with the SpR and it is expected that the fellow will do some teaching.

 

In addition, there will be opportunities to be involved in the following for educational and training purposes:

 

•       Departmental teaching sessions

•       Clinical Governance meetings

•       Audit, Research and Quality Improvement

 

There is plenty of support to participate in projects within the department.
