Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for 4 6month fixed term (Until April 2027) locally employed Clinical Fellows in Vascular, GI surgery, Breast Endocrine and Sarcoma Surgery ( BESS), Emergency General Surgery based across two sites primarily (Bournemouth and Poole Hospital’s). The vacancies have arisen due to a shortfall in provision of trainees for a 6 month period and are not expected to be extended from April 2027. These posts would be suitable both for those looking to gain experience or looking to broaden their range of clinical experience. Each successful applicant will be allocated as follows:

1. BESS registrar at Poole Hospital

2. Colorectal registrar at Bournemouth Hospital

3. Vascular and Breast Registrar at Bournemouth Hospital

4. Colorectal and Upper GI registrar at Poole Hospital

Each registrar will be part of the general surgical on call Rota. Successful candidates will be asked to express an order of preference for each post. Whilst it cannot be guaranteed all efforts will be made to place successful candidates in their preferred position.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible to work in the UK.

The post potentially offers wide experience and training in all aspects of General Surgery.  The post holder will work with a team of r 40 experienced Consultant Surgeons supported by a team of 25 registrars, 14 SHOs/ CT1, JCF, F2/F3 and 22 FY1s and several advanced and enhanced nurse practitioners. Depending on the applicant's area of interest there may be opportunity to gain specialist training in Vascular, General Surgery, Breast, Endocrine and Sarcoma Surgery, Emergency General Surgery.

The duties of the post include: 

• Out-patient clinics – managing new and follow up patients independently, under supervision and teaching as required 

• Operating – independently, under supervision, assisting and training as appropriate. 

• Attendance at and participation in MDT meetings 

• Daily ward rounds 

• Supervision of junior surgical staff.  

• Active participation in clinical audit, governance and research. 

• Teaching of medical students and surgical trainees 

• Pre and post operative care of admissions 

• Participation in middle grade on call rota (currently working a 1 in 10 rota but subject to change).
