Summary
Key Responsibilities Advanced Occupational Health Practice Undertake comprehensive occupational health assessments using information gathered from self-reports, GP records, specialist reports, medical documentation, and workplace information. Conduct fitness-for-work and work capability assessments for individuals with physical health conditions, mental health concerns, musculoskeletal disorders, long-term conditions, disabilities, and neurodiverse needs. Assess the impact of health conditions on attendance, workplace performance, productivity, and safety. Develop evidence-based recommendations to support sustainable employment, workplace retention, rehabilitation, and return-to-work outcomes. Advise on reasonable adjustments, workplace modifications, phased return programmes, redeployment opportunities, and vocational rehabilitation interventions. Manage highly complex occupational health cases involving long-term sickness absence, disability, workplace conflict, psychosocial barriers, and multiple co-morbidities. Determine the need for specialist intervention, referral, escalation, or multidisciplinary support. Produce professional reports and recommendations that are clinically robust, evidence based, and defensible. Contribute to the development of occupational health policies, procedures, and clinical pathways. Promote preventative approaches that improve workforce wellbeing, reduce sickness absence, and prevent work loss. Fit Note Provision and Work Capability Assessment Undertake detailed assessments of functional capacity and work capability. Provide clinical recommendations regarding fitness for work, workplace adjustments, rehabilitation requirements, and return-to-work planning. Where professionally authorised and operating within current legislation and organisational governance arrangements, issue and sign fit notes and associated documentation. Advise individuals, employers, managers, and HR teams regarding implementation of fit note recommendations. Monitor progress against return-to-work goals and adapt interventions as required. Ensure work capability assessments are evidence-based, proportionate, and fully documented. Support reduction of unnecessary sickness absence through proactive case management and early intervention. Maintain accurate records of all assessments and recommendations. Referral Triage and Case Management Leadership Lead the clinical triage process for all referrals received within the WorkWell service. Assess referral urgency, complexity, risk, and suitability for intervention. Identify safeguarding concerns, mental health risks, workplace risks, and barriers to engagement. Prioritise and allocate referrals to the most appropriate member of the multidisciplinary team. Provide expert consultation and case supervision for complex or high-risk cases. Ensure seamless coordination between health, employment, welfare, and community services. Monitor referral volumes, waiting times, service demand, and case progression. Develop and maintain triage protocols and standard operating procedures. Escalate risks and capacity concerns through appropriate governance arrangements. Leadership of the WorkWell Service Provide visible clinical and operational leadership across the multidisciplinary WorkWell team. Translate strategic objectives into effective operational delivery plans. Ensure achievement of service objectives, key performance indicators, quality standards, and contractual requirements. Lead multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, governance sessions, and service improvement initiatives. Monitor service performance, outcomes, productivity, quality indicators, and resource utilisation. Support service redesign, transformation, and innovation programmes. Promote a culture of excellence, continuous improvement, equality, diversity, and inclusion. Lead implementation of new service pathways, interventions, and workforce initiatives. Produce detailed reports and performance information for commissioners, governance groups, and senior leaders. Employer Engagement and Workplace Health Leadership Develop and maintain effective relationships with employers across public, private, and voluntary sector organisations. Act as the lead Occupational Health Advisor for employer engagement within the WorkWell programme. Provide expert advice on attendance management, disability inclusion, occupational health case management, and workforce wellbeing. Support organisations to develop healthier workplaces through preventative and early intervention approaches. Advise employers on compliance with employment legislation and best practice relating to workplace health and disability management. Facilitate collaborative discussions between employers and employees to achieve positive workplace outcomes. Develop and deliver training programmes, workshops, presentations, and awareness sessions. Promote evidence-based approaches to supporting staff with health conditions and disabilities. Build employer confidence in managing long-term health conditions and workplace adjustments. Partnership and System Working Develop collaborative relationships with NHS organisations, Integrated Care Boards, Primary Care Networks, local authorities, DWP, Jobcentre Plus, VCSE organisations, and employers. Represent the WorkWell service at strategic meetings, partnership boards, steering groups, and stakeholder forums. Support development of integrated health, work, and wellbeing pathways. Improve coordination between healthcare services, employment support programmes, and community resources. Identify gaps in provision and contribute to development of innovative system-wide solutions. Support wider population health management and economic inactivity reduction initiatives. Contribute to regional and national health and employment priorities. Leadership and People Management Provide direct line management, supervision, and professional leadership to designated staff. Lead recruitment, induction, appraisal, probation, and performance management processes. Support staff development through coaching, mentoring, clinical supervision, and professional development opportunities. Monitor compliance with professional registration, mandatory training, and continuing professional development requirements. Promote a psychologically safe, inclusive, and supportive working environment. Lead workforce planning, workload allocation, and resource management activities. Address employee relations matters in line with organisational policies and procedures. Support succession planning and talent development within the team. Clinical Governance, Quality and Risk Management Maintain professional registration and practice in accordance with the relevant professional code of conduct. Ensure compliance with safeguarding requirements, data protection legislation, and information governance standards. Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical records. Lead investigations into incidents, complaints, and clinical concerns. Undertake audit, quality assurance, service evaluation, and outcome measurement activities. Implement learning from incidents and governance processes. Contribute to policy development and review. Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement and evidence-based practice. Ensure compliance with NHS governance frameworks and occupational health standards. Essential Certifications Current NMC Registration. Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health) Qualification (SCPHN OH) or Degree, Postgraduate Diploma, or MSc in Occupational Health. Occupational Health Case Management Training. Clinical Risk Assessment Training. Essential Experience Significant post-registration Occupational Health experience. Extensive experience managing complex occupational health caseloads independently. Experience undertaking fitness-for-work and work capability assessments. Experience managing long-term sickness absence and vocational rehabilitation cases. Experience delivering occupational health services within NHS, public sector, or large organisational environments.
