Summary

About us

Due to an internal promotion, the council’s Information Governance (IG) Team has a vacancy for a Principal IG Officer.

The IG team plays a key role in helping services manage information lawfully, securely and confidently. We support compliance with legislation including the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000, while providing practical advice on data protection, information security, records management and access to information.

The Information Governance Team is part of the Legal & Governance division of the Corporate Services directorate based at the Civic Centre in Swinton. The council supports hybrid working, with a mix of office-based and home-working arrangements.

About the Role

As Principal IG Officer, you will help strengthen the council’s approach to compliance, support good information management practice and contribute to a responsive, trusted and professional IG service.

You will support the IG Manager in delivering a professional compliance programme for the council. This will include advising on data protection impact assessments, data sharing and processor agreements, privacy notices, policies and procedures, and wider information management activity. You will also provide advice, guidance and training on data protection and Freedom of Information, represent the team at meetings and working groups, contribute to day-to-day operational delivery, and manage your own caseload to a high standard.

About you

We are looking for a confident, motivated and collaborative colleague who can bring sound judgement, attention to detail and a practical approach to information governance. You will be comfortable advising colleagues, explaining complex requirements clearly, and helping services find proportionate solutions that protect information while supporting effective service delivery.

A good working knowledge of data protection legislation is essential. Experience of working in information governance, compliance, records management, Freedom of Information or a related area would be beneficial. Most importantly, you will be keen to learn, willing to share your knowledge and committed to delivering high-quality advice and support to colleagues across the council.
