Summary

You've studied behaviour, development, cognition, mental health and individual differences. But what happens when a young person becomes overwhelmed in a classroom?

How does anxiety affect their ability to learn? What does emotional regulation actually look like in practice? how can the relationship with one trusted adult change the way a young person engages with education?

Quokka Education is looking for Psychology graduates to work as SEN Teaching Assistants in mainstream secondary and specialist SEND schools across Winchester.

If you're considering a future in Educational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Teaching, Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy or Mental Health, this is an opportunity to gain practical experience working directly with young people.

You'll support students with a range of additional needs, learning how different factors can affect communication, behaviour, emotional wellbeing and access to education.

You'll see first-hand that the same approach doesn't work for every young person.

One student might need help breaking a task into manageable steps.

Another may need support recognising and regulating their emotions.

Someone else might simply need time to build enough trust to accept your help.

You'll:

- Support students with additional needs in the classroom.

- Work individually and with small groups.

- Help young people overcome barriers to learning.

- Support emotional regulation, behaviour and wellbeing.

- Encourage communication, confidence and independence.

- Build positive, consistent relationships with students.

- Observe different approaches to SEND support.

- Work alongside experienced teachers and SEND professionals.

You don't need to arrive knowing how to be a Teaching Assistant.

Quokka Education will help you learn.

You'll receive SEND training, CPD and practical toolkits before you start, helping you understand what to expect and giving you strategies you can actually use in school.

You'll also have the opportunity to complete paid trial days, so you can experience the environment and decide whether the role feels right for you before committing.

We're looking for graduates who are:

- Curious about how children and young people learn and develop.

- Patient and able to build relationships over time.

- Empathetic without lowering expectations.

- Resilient when situations don't go to plan.

- Comfortable taking guidance from experienced professionals.

- Interested in understanding what's behind a young person's behaviour.

- Motivated to gain meaningful experience before their next career step.

If you're considering postgraduate study or professional training, you may already be asking yourself:

"What experience do I need next?"

Working in SEND gives you the opportunity to develop experience of additional needs, behaviour, emotional regulation, safeguarding, communication and multidisciplinary working while supporting young people directly.

Through Quokka Education, you'll also receive:

- Opportunities across mainstream and specialist SEND schools.

- SEND training, CPD and practical toolkits.

- Paid trial days.

- Ongoing support from an experienced education team.

- Competitive rates of pay.

- Opportunities that regularly develop into long-term and permanent positions.

You don't need to have your entire career mapped out yet.

You might ultimately become an Educational Psychologist.

You might discover a passion for teaching.

You might move towards mental health, therapy or another area of supporting children and young people.

Or this experience might introduce you to a career you haven't considered yet.

Start by putting what you've learned into practice.

If you're a Psychology graduate in or around Winchester looking for meaningful experience from September, apply today with Quokka Education.

Know another graduate who could be brilliant at this?

Refer them to Quokka Education and receive £100 once they complete 10 days of work.

Quokka Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All applicants will be vetted in line with DfE guidance, including an enhanced DBS check and an online search as part of the recruitment process.
