Summary
As children progress through Key Stage 2, the expectations change. Learning becomes more complex, independence matters more and the foundations they're building now will help prepare them for everything that comes next. Some pupils get there quickly and others need someone alongside them who can break things down, build their confidence and gradually help them do more for themselves.
A supportive East London primary school is looking for an experienced KS2 Teaching Assistant to join its team on a full-time, long-term basis, starting immediately.
The school has a strong reputation for inclusion, high expectations and excellent behaviour, with a structured and nurturing environment where staff work collaboratively to help pupils succeed.
You'll work across KS2, supporting pupils during whole-class learning as well as providing targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions.
That might mean helping a pupil understand a difficult maths concept. Supporting another to organise their ideas before writing. Working with a small group to strengthen their reading comprehension, or recognising that a child with additional needs requires a different explanation, more processing time or a more structured approach before the learning begins to click.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions across KS2.
- Supporting pupils with reading, writing, maths and problem-solving.
- Helping children consolidate learning and close gaps in understanding.
- Supporting pupils with mild to moderate SEN, including ASD, ADHD, speech and language needs and SEMH.
- Adapting your support around individual learning needs.
- Assisting teachers with lesson preparation and classroom organisation.
- Reinforcing established behaviour expectations and classroom routines.
- Encouraging pupils to attempt tasks independently before stepping in.
- Helping children develop resilience, confidence and positive learning habits.
- Maintaining a calm, structured and inclusive learning environment.
- Observing pupil progress and communicating effectively with teaching staff.
- Following safeguarding procedures and maintaining professional communication with staff and parents.
A great Teaching Assistant doesn't simply make the work easier. You need to know when a pupil genuinely needs your support and when they need the confidence to have another go themselves. We're looking for someone who can build positive relationships with pupils while maintaining clear expectations and appropriate boundaries.
You'll need to be patient without becoming passive, encouraging without doing the work for the child, and proactive enough to recognise when a teacher or pupil needs your support without always waiting to be asked.
Previous KS2 classroom experience is essential for this position.
You'll also need:
- Experience supporting children with SEN within a primary school environment.
- A good understanding of the expectations and learning needs of KS2 pupils.
- Confidence supporting core areas including literacy and numeracy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A patient, proactive and supportive approach.
- The ability to work effectively alongside teachers and other support staff.
- Professionalism and reliability within a busy primary environment.
- The ability to commit to a full-time, long-term position starting immediately.
- An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
A degree is highly desirable, particularly within education or a related subject.
