The purpose of this post is to enable the successful candidate to gain further experience in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery for young people, whilst providing senior support to the professional team in carrying out its Clinical & Research workload in outpatient clinics, operating lists and ward work.

Applicants must be at the level of FRCS (Tr and Orth) or equivalent, and have completed, or have an agreed CCT (certificate of completion of training) date in Trauma and Orthopaedics in order to be shortlisted. The successful candidate will be intending to pursue Paediatric Orthopaedic surgery as a specialist career and will have experience in Children’s Orthopaedic surgery and be able to work in senior position of responsibility in an Orthopaedic team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

a. Aims and responsibilities of the post

To work alongside the team of consultants, nurses, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals to provide a tertiary level of paediatric orthopaedic care to the children under the care of the team in Oxford.This will involve both inpatient and outpatient work, and may also include supporting the consultants in the peripheral centers where the OUIH has service-level agreements in place.

b. Clinical commitments

The formal programme will be agreed in consultation with the team and the appointee’s needs, but an example timetable is attached below:

Monday – theatre

Tuesday – theatre

Wednesday – clinic

Thursday – theatre

Friday – theatre

Alongside this, the fellow will be expected to sit into general and pre-operative clinics with consultants for their learning, attend gait lab interpretation sessions, and participate in the DDH and Ponseti service. These will be arranged flexibly around the clinical needs of the department. There is also scope for the Fellow to attend lists and clinics in other specialties if they so wish, upon agreement with the relevant other departments.

The fellow will also be expected to participate in academic work with the aim of publishing one academic paper over the course of the fellowship.

c. Facilities for studying and training:

Good library facilities are available at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, and the Oxford Radcliffe, via Bodleian Library

d. Teaching, audit and research:

Participation in research and audit is required.
