Summary

Applicants must demonstrate independent competence in adult cardiac surgery, experience in retrieval services and machine perfusion, excellent communication and leadership skills, and the ability to work effectively under pressure. Essential qualities include professionalism, sound clinical judgement, commitment to education and lifelong learning, strong organisational skills, digital literacy, and a commitment to evidence-based practice, audit and continuous service improvement. The role requires a motivated, collaborative individual who embodies UHB's values of being Kind, Connected and Bold. The appointed consultant will work within the department to provide clinical care for elective and emergency cardiac surgical patients. The appointee must have sufficient ability and experience to manage and operate independently on these patients. In addition, the post will include a commitment to participate in cardiopulmonary retrieval, transplantation and mechanical support surgery. The consultant will be required to share in the on-call rota for general cardiac surgical emergencies, cardiothoracic trauma, cardio-pulmonary retrieval and transplantation. The appointees job plan will be based on 10 PAs with the possibility to increase this by mutual agreement. The job plan includes fixed operating lists and a weekly out-patient clinic as well as departmental clinical and quality of care meetings. The consultant will be expected to participate in post graduate education and training, and opportunities exist for teaching and training to other healthcare learner groups. The appointee will have responsibility for patients under his/her care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure. The appointee will share clinical responsibility with colleagues in running the clinical work of the department and take part in the joint on call rota of the department. The appointee will play a role in meeting the Department's contracted obligations for the provision of cardiac surgery services and in ensuring that the overall performance of the Unit meets the appropriate quality criteria.
