Full-time, permanent appointment subject to funding Based in Liverpool The Human Challenge Facility is seeking a passionate and dedicated Senior Research Nurse to join our dynamic and agile delivery team You will work in the Human Challenge Facility, an 18-bedded outpatient research space and the new 12-bedded inpatient isolation facility within LSTM. This cutting-edge facility will serve as a focal point for experimental medicine research, focusing on human challenge models to test vaccine and drug safety and efficacy. The HCF will play a pivotal role in the development of new treatments and vaccines, enabling LSTM to continue its global impact on infection treatment and control. The successful post holder will be required to take on a leadership role within the HCF, overseeing the clinical operations and staff. The postholder will be instrumental in operationalising the facility for its first inpatient study, ensuring quality, integrity, and excellence in clinical trial delivery. Key Responsibilities: Strategic and Leadership Duties Lead the day-to-day management of clinical activities within the HCF.Oversee the clinical team and visiting staff, ensuring smooth operations.Support the Clinical Operations Manager and deputise when required.Implement processes to ensure high-quality research delivery aligned with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.Act as a key point of contact between the research team, NHS, external agencies, and LSTM departments. Clinical Responsibilities Conduct research visits, clinical assessments, and procedures such as venepuncture, vital signs monitoring, and respiratory sampling.Assist in research bronchoscopy procedures, ensuring safe patient care.Administer treatments and investigational drugs in accordance with study protocols.Ensure study-specific investigations are completed per protocol requirements.Manage caseloads of study participants and ensure safety monitoring. Research & Compliance Manage a portfolio of clinical studies, ensuring adherence to protocols and regulatory frameworks.Assist in obtaining informed consent, assessing participant eligibility, and ensuring study compliance.Record and report adverse events, study deviations, and safety concerns appropriately.Identify and implement strategies for participant recruitment and retention.Ensure data collection is accurate, complete, and stored in compliance with regulatory standards. Training & Development Develop and deliver training for staff across clinical, laboratory, and trial management teams.Support junior team members and ensure their professional development.Maintain up-to-date clinical and research competencies, including mandatory training.Engage in research-specific training and amendments to study protocols. Administrative & Operational Duties Develop and review study-specific documents and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).Maintain databases and accurate records of participant activity and financial tracking.Oversee resource management, including medical supplies and consumables.Coordinate recruitment events and public engagement initiatives to promote research participation This role will require flexible working arrangements and may include out-of-hours working and night shifts. The Ideal Candidate Will Possess: Qualifications & Training: Registered Nurse (Adult) with NMC registration (Essential)Degree in a healthcare-related fieldGood Clinical Practice (GCP) certificationBLS/ILS certification Skills & Experience: Experience leading and managing a clinical teamSignificant experience in clinical researchExperience coordinating clinical trials, including regulatory complianceProficiency in venepuncture, IV cannulation, and clinical investigationsStrong project management and organisational skillsExperience in staff training and mentorshipCompetency with MS Office and electronic data management toolsWillingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and night shifts, as required Informal enquiries can be made to:  Angela.hyder-wright@lstmed.ac.uk or Sarah.Dodd@lstmed.ac.uk Your workplace: You will work in the Human Challenge Facility at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, part of the Knowledge Quarter. Working Pattern: This role requires flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, night shifts, Bank Holidays, and other out-of-hours shifts. Additional payment covers unsocial hours.
