Summary
Café Supervisor – Hobson’s Café
Reporting to: Café Manager
Role Purpose
The Café Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of Hobson’s Café, a vibrant café based in Hoole Community Centre. The Café supervisor runs the café, ensuring high standards of food quality, customer service, food safety and financial control.
The Café Supervisor will lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, reliability and a positive attitude at all times. A key aspect of this role is the effective leadership, support and professional management of volunteers while maintaining the highest standards of service and conduct.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Operational Management
• Ensure the café is fully set up and prepared for service each day.
• Ensure adequate supplies are available to deliver the daily menu; informing the Café Manager promptly when stock levels are low.
• Prepare and cook food in line with the daily menu and agreed standards.
• Develop creative daily specials using available ingredients to minimise waste and maximise value.
• Supervise café personnel and volunteers during service, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
• Follow Hoole Community Centre policies at all times.
• Assist with the planning and delivery of special events, buffets and external catering as required.
• Work closely with the Café Manager, building positive working relationships with the Centre Manager and Volunteer Co-ordinator.
2. Food Safety & Compliance
• Ensure full compliance with Food Safety and Health & Safety regulations.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date food safety documentation.
• Ensure all opening and closing checks are completed and recorded.
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen, tearoom and associated areas.
• Promote safe working practices at all times.
3. Volunteer Leadership & Professional Conduct
• Provide clear direction, guidance and support to volunteers during each shift.
• Ensure volunteers understand their roles and carry out duties effectively and confidently.
• Foster a positive, inclusive and respectful team environment.
• Manage volunteers in a professional and supportive manner always.
• Address minor performance issues promptly and escalate concerns to the Café Manager where appropriate.
• Ensure volunteers represent the Café and HCDT in a professional manner at all times.
4. Customer Service
• Deliver a warm, friendly and efficient customer experience.
• Ensure all team members provide consistently high standards of customer care.
• Ensure all food and beverages are prepared and presented to a high standard.
• Address customer queries or concerns professionally and promptly.
5. Financial Responsibilities
• Complete or oversee daily cashing-up procedures accurately.
• Support and train team members in cash handling procedures where appropriate.
• Ensure cash is stored securely and that a daily float is prepared.
• Ensure all expenditure is supported by appropriate receipts and documentation.
• Ensure stock is well controlled, managing waste and purchases.
6. Training & Development
• Provide induction training to new staff and volunteers.
• Support ongoing training and development within the team.
• Ensure training records are accurately maintained and securely stored.
7. Maintenance & Security
• Ensure kitchen equipment, furnishings and café areas are properly maintained.
• Report any maintenance issues or damage promptly to the Café or Centre Manager.
• Ensure all café areas (including external areas) are clean, safe and secure.
• Opening the venue, completing morning safety checks.
8. Staffing Support
• Inform the Café Manager or Centre Manager of staffing concerns, including attendance, punctuality or performance issues.
